As explained to me by a baby doctor many years ago, a large contingent of circumcision in western culture (ie N. Amercia) had absolutely zero to do with religion. It started after the early 1900's wars, especially WW1, where a huge onslaught of soldiers suffered immensely from infections cause by lack of sanitation due to trench warfare, long periods with no way to get and stay clean etc and had to deal with adult circumcision after the fact, and them not wanting their sons to go through the same thing. Even the military encouraged circumcision for boys since they would one day become probable soldiers themselves (enter WW2).

By no means am I saying this is a reason to go get snipped today, but it was why many of our great grandfathers/grandfathers/fathers got snipped and why many of us with parentage who went through the wars are snipped, because of their experience with the alternative. From there obviously it became a thing of "this is how my dad was, and it is how I am, and now it is how my boy is. I know that is why we circumcised out son when he was born 25 years ago. It wasn't because of a belief of anything. It was just how it was always done, right or wrong.

Move ahead to today, knowing what I know now I would never have had it done to him. While I could not give a shit either way, circumcised or not, I now feel like it was not my decision to make on his behalf. I causes me some discomfort to be honest. I actually apologized to him over it in recent years. He just shrugged and said he doesn't care and he gets it but I still feel shitty about it personally.

So get it done when you are older and can consent to it. I have no issues with circumcisions. I do have issues with it on infants.
