Default The State knows what's best for you - Driving Edition!

This world is ridiculous. Government is the worst. Etc. Etc

The European Union officially adopted a mandate Wednesday requiring all new vehicles sold in the EU to include technology that could prevent drivers from speeding when activated.

    https://www.thedrive.com/news/europe..._term=thedrive

On a side note, I am unsure who will explain why this is a good thing that's ridiculous to complain about first - kert or Thaco....

Why would you need to speed when roads are only a certain speed limit?

    -Kert, probably

If they have this tech available, then they also can turn the vehicle off remotely. Only buy old cars.

My understanding is it’s going to be essentially optional. Which is good.

    Still gay tho

Even your sunny side up disposition can't believe it's going to always be that way.

The issue with optional is that insurance companies with charge a higehr cost of vehicles without it. So people will be forced by inurance rates.

If they are switching to EVs, there will be no slow cars.

Most stage 2/3 cruise/autodrive systems already do this trying to slow your car to match posted speed. Cars already have blackboxes and your phone is already have detail telemetry history if they ever ask Google or Apple to hand over the data. And sounds like you can hit a button to defeat it on purpose.

So I agree with Tony that this is all about insurance.

Demolition Man will soon all come true.

And fine revenue. It'll be tied in to "policing" soon enough.

In the meantime, of all places, Florida is cracking down on loud exhaust and music from cars.

There is probably a large contingent of Beyond members who likely have no problem with this. The “cars are boring and uninteresting, I’d rather talk about penises” crowd, will be unaffected.

People who drive with higher risk behaviour get charged more?

All too common around here on a variety of topics. Same same but different.

Out of genuine interest, when Touchstone stuck me with Intact...I downloaded their app that supposedly tracks your driving and adjusts your premium based on your driving

Now I drive my own vehicles like Driving Miss Daisy, but I got the weekly, monthly or whatever stats in one time and it had me doing multiple rapid acceleration events right through a field just off Peigan and 36th St.

So clearly they just make it up to rip off the consumer and they can get away with it because Canada.

Essentially, we will get the tyranny of Europe but with communist Ontario idiots enabling it

Lots of cars already have this feature. My last 3 cars had it. Can set speed limit +10 kmh and I’ll warn me if I’m speeding over 10. On cruise it’ll refuse to go above 10 over. It gets annoying fast, only enabled it to see if I’m decent at sticking to limits (I’m not haha).

Ya what could go wrong. Pull out to pass on 2 lane highway, car appears approaching too fast, your vehicle doesnt allow you to accelerate past the double tanker truck you are trying to pass, smash and dead.

You don't need to speed if you're passing traffic, otherwise stay behind!

I think we'll need to start a new Hutterite/Amish style colony where we believe that the world had the correct amount of technology from 2000-2015 and we can't use anything made after that

We're paying less than 450€/year for full coverage on a $30k vehicle in Spain.

Seems they've got the insurance thing figured out better than Canada does....
