Ya what could go wrong. Pull out to pass on 2 lane highway, car appears approaching too fast, your vehicle doesnt allow you to accelerate past the double tanker truck you are trying to pass, smash and dead.
That doesn’t happen in the proposed systems.

The European Road and Safety Charter says that drivers will be able to countermand the speed limiter by applying further pressure to the accelerator. If the system becomes too cumbersome, the vehicle operator will also have the ability to disable the system completely.
Sometimes I wish we could all just read instead of uninformed outrage.

Social media headline politics at its finest. Our 2017 Touran has the option of excess speed alerts. They can be annoying in the city but I really don't mind it for highway driving since signage isn't always clear and we all know cops take advantage of that.

I'm in favor of letting Darwinism sort out the population. Creating laws to protect people from themselves is fucking ridiculous.

It’s one of those we’ll get there when we get there. Mandatory warning system is fine, but all eyes will be on regulations if you can’t forcibly speed, as it puts those new vehicles under new regulation at higher risks on roads with under speed limits set under 80th percentile speeds.

We're paying less than 450€/year for full coverage on a $30k vehicle in Spain.

Seems they've got the insurance thing figured out better than Canada does....
    Doesn’t seem any cheaper.

They might say its possible to just press the accelerator harder but I dont trust the coding on all of these systems. My f150 nearly killed me the other day when I was crossing the highway because I floored the accelerator and I got 0 acceleration and I think it was due to the cross traffic sense system. Kind of like when the teslas just crashed headon into semi trucks.

I think a big thing with all these driver assistance systems that are getting added is consumers are not nearly aware enough about the nature of and what is enabled on the vehicles. They buy a car and the SA turns them all on and they forget about them.

My x5 has a button on the steering wheel that prevents me from going over the posted speed limit, as detected by the camera system, convenient for when there is a police cruiser behind you or a photo radar enforced 30 zone or something. If I needed to “accelerate to avoid a collision” I would be unable to. BUT I need to press the button to turn on the system.

I have heard many the old wives tail from people who claim their Mercedes’ tried to ram into the back of a semi when it jerked them back into their lane when they tried to pass without signalling. Etc etc.

People like to bitch about automatic light sensors. List just goes on and on.

I think more of these driver assistance systems should need positive input from the driver to enable them. Every time they get in the car. Drivers need to take way more responsibility for the impact of assistance systems on vehicle performance.

Car insurance rates in Alberta by city

To do a fair comparison of cities, we pulled quotes using the same driver profile: a 35-year-old man driving a 2018 Honda Cívic with a conviction and claims-free insurance record.

    ALBERTA TOTAL $1,991
    Calgary $2,230
    Edmonton $2,124
    Airdrie $2,000
$2000 is substantially more than $600 - and it's not even clear if that's for full coverage in Alberta.

I think there's a point where there is too much technology but that seems to be the way we are heading.

That data sounds flawed coming from a guy with 3 anecdotal data points of not cheap vehicles with full coverage.

Either that or TD is a way better deal than beyond makes it out to be.

What data points do you suggest I use? I mean, 3x more isn't even close so if you're arguing the data is flawed, it must be incredibly flawed.

The average cost of car insurance in Alberta is $1,514, according to 2020 data from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).

However, a 35-year-old Alberta man can expect to pay $1,991 a year for car insurance, according to RATESDOTCA data from late 2021.

    Use whatever data you want.

I’m telling you none of my 3 vehicles with full coverage cost me anywhere close to your quoted Calgary average of 2200 a year.

And they sure as hell didn’t cost 30 grand.

I would guess any real data on insurance rates is closely held by the companies. So comparing their aggregation to your anecdotal data may not be an apples to apples comparison.

Not to mention I imagine coverage, mileage, and crash statistics vary significantly between Alberta and Europe.

Yea, those are nothing close to my rates with TD. I’ll have to login and check tmr. From memory, $1200 for the sienna, $1100 for the E53, $700 for the Sentra, $650 for the Miata. All full coverage, and I also have 1 conviction expiring next year.
