Default BMW starts selling heated seat subscriptions for $18 a month

    https://www.theverge.com/2022/7/12/2...-seats-feature

Thoughts? Has anyone seen this in Canada yet? It seems like a good opportunity to add features later on if you can’t afford them upfront, but on the other hand it just feels wrong to be paying for car features as a subscription.

Is the entire industry headed this way?

Charging extra for ASD is a hilarious concept. Most people pay to turn that off.

Feels cheesy though, very down market.

Just for heated seats or I wonder if it’s gonna be like that for all the other options too

This is what matters when everyone is financed to the tits and payments are the only thing that matters.

Get the payment down to $500 a month, only to find out a month later your heated seats are another 8
    $8/mo.

    Consumers are the problem

This will be an easily hackable thing.

Give the market ~6 months to adjust.

I can't wait to buy engine/horn sound packages.

Limited edition Looney Tunes package with Speedy Gonzales running sound, Marvin spaceship sound, Roadrunner meep meep horn & the ever classic a-wooo-ga option.

Maybe a graduated fee structure for starting the engine at various temps during the winter. Damn it’s -31° outside and I’m only subscribed down to -29°, gotta wait a few hours.

You can still buy the option permanently for $400. Subs are just for poor people. For now.

    I don’t necessarily hate this.

I prefer low-optioned models anyway, all this automated crap can stay disabled. If I can get a fully-loaded, but option disabled X5 @ $70k for example, then decide later to activate radar cruise for a summer road trip, I’m on board.

If BMWs plan is for consumers to buy a fully optioned X5 at current prices, plus pay subscriptions to use said options, they can eat my ass.

I think you're being facetious, but that is definitely a package I'd pay for.

Haha. I was, but I was trying to think of something ridiculously awesome like all the Forza horns or "x Fortnite" crossover stuff from my son's video games, lol.

Technically you are paying for the hardware at an increased base price since it’s physically installed. Not like bean counters at BMW are ok with adding production cost to all cars and banking on subscription revenue to cover the costs. They might make $0 on it being installed on all vehicles, but you’re definitely already paying for it.

You're paying monthly instead of a cap cost. It's basically a lease or a Shak special. I don't know why people are so up in arms about this.

As a car buyer that doesn't lease, I wouldn't be thrilled if (when?) all automakers start to do this. As mentioned, it probably materializes as an increase in base price + subscription, so I'm likely paying more over the course of the asset lifecycle. Further, it opens the door to nickel and diming for everything.

That being said, this amounts to nothing more than fist shaking at clouds here, because I assume this is all going to happen regardless of how unhappy some people are about it.

I dont lease either because for a variety of reasons. But the fact that it is a monthly payment isn't really one of those reasons.

If you’re talking about TCO, and you swap cars shak style, you’re better off with a sub model. I don’t keep cars more than 3 years, averaging 2 years lately, and I’ll be ahead on sub heated seats vs outright purchase. It’s not like heated seats are recuperated in resale value.

And with the Ford "you can't buy the battery" nonsense, you can see where this is going.
