Why are so many people ordering their own laptops for work? Are companies starting to do BYOD more these days? Please tell me they at least reimburse you? And if so what’s the standard allowance? And do you get to keep the difference if you buy a shittier laptop / find a great sale?

I think a lot of smaller companies have gone to BYOD for new employees. In my case I expect to be reimbursed.

Suncor is taking away the computers they gave contractors and making them get their own. But that’s fairly typical of contractor life I guess.

Pretty basic office suite usage. Company is an office 365 organization.

Thinking Lenovo ThinkPad E16 fits the bill, okay keyboard for when I'm actually typing. Like the upgraded screen.

Five minutes on the config tool gets me to this. Sale right now too.

that particular machine I would add backlit keys.

Also use "SUPERTHINKOCT" coupon code. Not sure if this will affect rakuten cashback though.

In darker places, probably help with placing your hands when starting to type. We just usually add that when configure laptops for our company.

@Mitsu3000gt , I think you were the dude with the Lenovo EPP code. Does that still exist? May not be better than the current sale, unless its stackable.

Hilarious. I will not be needing to BYOD to this role, company has just onboarded a bunch of people at the head office and has a machine ready for me already. Will be sitting in the office on day 1, already set up. Don't really mind that, makes any IT problems fully "their problem".

Anywhoooo, guess I don't need to play with the online configurator any more, unless I buy something for the wife for the home office . . . .

BYOD and a session to Virtual Desktop that the company can monitor and control isn't that bad of an idea.

Yeah it works pretty well and keeps things secure but I guess I didn’t realize it was so common these days for staff positions. We’ve been doing it for contractors as of around 6 months ago I think so it’s definitely a good proven model to save costs.

Now that I think of it I’d much prefer a $2000 credit every 3 years or so to buy my own stuff vs my company issued surface pro 9.

Rakuten now giving 12% cash back, and Lenovo big October sale still active.

Give it a few years and some consultant would see that as a cost saving measure. People have computers at home already, let’s reduce the reimbursement down to $500 every 5 years.

Costco also has an electronics sale now until the 12th.

Valid on TVs, smart watches, tablets, desktops, laptops, monitors, audio, unlocked phones and all Apple products

    $200 off purchases of $1000 - $1499
    $300 off purchases of $1500 - $1999
    $500 off purchase of $2000+

The work-issued MS Surface laptop has been shitty since day 1. Are they all shitty? They sure don't passive cool very well. Fucking fan is running all damned day. Anyway, I keep complaining, and seems like they may buy me the thinkpad I wanted. Funny stuff.

Well, I have had 3 thinkpads in a row, and thought they were fine. certainly none as annoying as this MS Surface. Admittedly, it's the lowest spec surface, and I think probably not new for my personal use. I also don't do any processor-intensive activities. Like ***shudder*** facilities engineering ***/shudder***. thanks fucking gawd.

In terms of thermal management, a larger conventional laptop just has more internal air volume and external surface radiator volume than a 13.5 inch surface tablet/laptop hybrid thingy. Or whatever this POS is. It's small.

Speaking of physical size. If you have to type on a laptop keyboard, having a physically laptop is really helpful.
