Default Mosquitos: Repellents, traps or ?

This is a bad year for mosquitos. Lot of repellent options, mostly with Icaridin or Deet as the active ingredient. But what about something that protects a larger area?

Anyone use those "area" repellents like Thermacell? Anyone use the big traps like Dynatrap or Mosquito Magnet or anything?

    Discuss Mosquito mitigation options.

I run a dynatrap. the big one from Costco. It works well, but it's not an immediate cure. It's designed to reduce the local population over time.

Thermacells work really well for a more immediate need right at a table or soemthing. I'm not sure how well they work in the wind, but then again, skeeters dont love wind.

I'm looking at getting the new Thermacell LIV system.

is that the 1/2 acre dynatrap? Do you need to use an attractant with that or is the light good enough by itself? There's a few Light plus vac type machines. Some knock off brands are pretty cheap.

The big Dynatrap is 1 acre and I'm currently less than a third of an acre away from 2 of them. There are still mosquitoes. It looks like about a pound of dead moths and mosquitoes in it, but still...

The true amazing ones don't seem available anymore and they were those propane ones. Those are Mosquito Auschwitz. Want.
There was even a Coleman one. "Mosquito Magnet"??

I rely on DEET for repellant.
*Although... I only saw that other one ES mentioned for the first time today. I'll probably try it on my kids.

I've been using a thermacell for a few years now and love it. Effective within a couple minutes.

The icaridin is less effective than deet AND you need to use more of it, but it is a better choice for kids.

I picked up the 1/2 acre Dynatrap from Costco. It seems to be working. I have it at one end of the deck that we don't hang out at. Like Pen said, it looks like death in there after a night. I turn it on an hour or so before we go outside. It's been effective.

I also have a Dynatrap. It's caught a ton of mosquitoes, but there are still some in the yard at dusk/in the morning. It's been on for about a week; we noticed an immediate improvement, and I anticipate it's going to continue to get better over time. @DonJuan , you're supposed to just run it 24/7. You're undermining the effectiveness if you only turn it on sporadically.

This is the LIV system that I want to get. Unfortunately only available in the US right now. Hence my request about a sweetgrass run.

Oh? My bad, I thought it wouldn't attract much during the daylight. That would help when I'm doing yard work during the day.

I run a Thermacell Radius for the deck and camping, works amazing for a smaller area, start it up and 5-10 mins later you will be free of mosquitos.

I've been looking for a Mosquito Magnet the past few days and can't find any in stock, moved to an acreage and they have been horrendous after all the on and off rain/heat.

Growing up in Yellowknife we had a moquito magnet and its basket was full every single day. Had 2 baskets we would swap out in the freezer to kill them. Put it somewhere on your property away from where you want to be, as there's gonna be mosquitos around it all the time. Works awesome though.

Is this the thing everyone keeps talking about and recommends then? If I place it on my deck it'll take care of all of the fuckers from the backyard/treed area as well?

    EDIT: Forgot the link;

I also use a Mosquito Magnet. Wherever I set it up, after a day there is a mountain of spiderwebs all over/around it. Having learned this I began to move it around every couple days to facilitate spiderweb growth around the property.

I figure I will deal with the spiders later, then whatever comes after that, then snakes, then mongoose...

We run both the thermacell on our patio to chase the mosquitos away and a dynatrap at the other end of.our yard to catch them. Works pretty well. Our front yard (nothing) vs backyard mosquito ratio is like 1000:1

    Mosquito Magnet works long term.
Should have had it out awhile ago. Attractant in there is for the females (if I recall).
Place between water source, wind flow and where you're outside.
Keep eye on Propane and keep trap clean. Usually a few days it'll be full.

Thermacell works but smaller area and short term use.

    Pick your method.

Mosquito dunks work too for standing water. Drowns any larvae and keeps surface tension down to prevent new mosquitoes.

    Buy immediately!!

Also that whole "fogging" thing has gone by the wayside, but it was also incredible. Fire up the fogging wand thing and warm up some delicious Malathion for the tall grasses, bushes and bases of trees.
    Reconcile.
