I decided to go ahead with upgrading to the new dell.

Unlike the rest of you mouth breathers, I learned how to move my fingers to a diff spot to find the ctrl button. That wasn't a make or break on the Thinkpad for me. Now I'll have to learn to go back to traditional ctrl location, but I think I'll survive.

Most of us at work who need them have nice laptops, MSI 10-11th gen i7, 32gb ram, Quadro vid cards. I have been having some memory issues (i think) when working with largish (2-3000 part) IV or SW assemblies. Things start to not work right or strange software behaviour starts happening, reboot seems to solve problems.

We have amd ryzen threadripper workhorse pc I can RDP in to work on CFD and larger assemblies if needed. I can crash that thing if I want to as well so... Seems pretty good.

First colder day, I miss the hand warming feature of my previous intel based laptops.

Well another update. Got the dell, and it was a piece of shit. It felt like typing on a $20 children's toy, and the wifi didn't work when they tried to give it to me.

I asked them to take it back, and get me a thinkpad, which came in today. It's a T14 gen3. It's no X1 carbon, but significantly nicer than any of the Dell or HP options I had. Pleased so far, except that it wasn't specced with a backlit keyboard which is a bummer. I figured everything had a backlit keyboard these days (including the 3 yr old x390 that this is replacing).

We got Miscrosoft surface pro 8's for work and I like it a lot more than I thought I would. Super light and compact and handy for all the stupid in-person meetings we still do. Only downside was I had to get a second dock for home/office but it is nice to just carry the surface and not care about any other peripherals or charger now. Haven't really had any issues with the lack of performance thus far but we also use a lot of RDP sessions into servers anyways so local power is rarely a concern.

Only gripe is the keyboard being magnetic is sometimes it comes off if I try to open it while carrying instead of being down on a desk.

I have a "Developer" class laptop from work. HP Elitebook. Decent specs and for the most part does pretty good. Have some issues with a program we use daily, but its likely the program itself.

The Lenovo ctrl location is changeable in the BIOS by the way, not sure if it was mentioned, didn't see it last couple of pages. You can flip CTRL and FN keys around. It's a piss-off but I got used to it myself. Most of the time I use a dock, so not really an issue for me.

Have been using Lenovo P1 Gen4 ever since Gen4 came out, and had a gen3 before that, really love it, pretty slim and very capable. I reboot like once a month if that...and usually have so many things open it takes me half a day to find what I am looking for haha.

Mine is an i7-11850H proc, 32 GB ECC Ram, 1TB SSD, 4K screen, it's pretty much a beast and I never have any lag at all.

Work is looking at upgrading mine. Basic specs would be:
    Intel Core i9-12950HX
    RTX A4500
    128 GB Ram
    2 x 2TB SSD.

All I do is email and meetings haha. Really, I'd be fine with a Dell Latitude e7240 from 2014.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

Curious how’s the battery life on the Max. My in office days, I can go a full day unplugged with 55% battery left when I head home. Same config as yours, except I went builder grade base cpu.

Truth. If my PowerPoint goes past 20 slides I think I'd get fired.

Doesn’t the system keep the performance cores dark 99% of the time?

Since the efficiency part of the chip is the same I would guess essentially no additional power draw?

I dunno that's why I'm asking haha. I bought RE Village on Mac and pretty impressed at what a lowly base M1 Air can do for games. So curious if it's worth going for more CPU in the future for like the 3 games that Mac has.
