Yeah buy a Toyota. Their alternators/batteries/starters never go bad
What you're describing is actually quite a common situation for LRs, go into the shop for X and it turns out XYZ is all fucked. Have a buddy that walked into a shop for a $500 issue, $7 grand later he got his car back.
Cut your losses and sell the car, or you'll be posting another one of these threads in 6 months.
2k repair for an 06' seems cheap But you haven't listened to any of the advice given so far; keep it and find a better shop or learn to work on it yourself. Neither will be cheap, for a beater.
not a RR but same concept

Slight exaggeration, perhaps? There's a single black one on kijiji right now for under $30k, and it's got 270k on itThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
07+ LX's are not cheap, nor plentiful on the used market, regardless of color.
@Kloubek - Way back in the day when I owned a LR the go-to was Rover Park boys (closed in 2013) out of Edmonton (I think?) for parts. I believe their inventory of parts/vehicles was acquired by TRS Automotive in Calgary. (which still advertises as a LR specialist). Have no recent knowledge of sourcing LR parts...too late for this go-round, but may be another lead/shop for you going forward. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
My LR ('95 Disco) was surprisingly reliable. Only repairs ever were a steering column stalk, and an alternator.

LX’s in Canada are bottom of the pile. I owned one in the US, loved it, tried to buy one here, and they all had:This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
A) funky smell due to previous owner’s cologne/car care routine
B) three+ accident claims - not small ones - $8k and up (Vancouver ones batted 100% on this metric - connect the dots on that one)
C) huge mileage
In 2028 I will import a 2013 US model from the south.
BritPart is where they get their stuff from. It's what supplied my Series III

Glad to be of service. I imagine it'll be closer to 3g when all is said and done. I'll make sure to post the final bill so it can delight you even further. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Once again, you are putting words in my mouth. I came on here to ASK what the general consensus would do with this situation, and how I felt about it. (Which I received. "Eat it and be happy. It's your own fault for buying LR"). I am open to opinion, but not opinion based on facts that never happened. You live in your own little make-believe world. Hope it works for you, but reality works for me.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Again, the repairs are frustrating, but I expected them with a LR. It's more that my starter got fried. (Initially it was also the poor work of the 1st shop, but I can see how there's nothing I can do about that but not use them again). As for a vehicle with little real world benefit, I disagree. Name me another sub-$15k vehicle I can get that is quick, has lots of space and luxury, can tow a travel trailer, and is an excellent offroading vehicle. It's pretty limited. I didn't buy it because it's a Rover. I bought it because it was one of the very few vehicles that met every need for my 2nd vehicle. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. If he accepted my part willingly, it's my responsibility to make sure it's the right part. And it was. It's their responsibility to put it in. Which they did. This really has nothing to do with the alternator itself whatsoever - unless that alternator is actually faulty and sending some sort of ridiculous voltage everywhere. And if so, that's also on me. I do agree though - trying to reduce costs by being involved isn't always a cost-saving measure. I'm learning this. Only took 47 years. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Fair. I've had difficulty finding a good shop. I took it to TRS (an "expert") who couldn't figure out why I had a lean code. They told me I needed new control arms and ball joints which were 1 month old, and they also said I needed an alignment to fix a tire wear issue. As it turns out, the alignment was $900 (and didn't fix the tire issue) and they were wrong on everything else as well. I ended up $1400 lighter, and didn't complain - I just decided to not go there again. The 1st shop in Chestermere I had used for convenience, but no longer. Then I bring it to the true experts - Rover - and parts start failing in their possession. It hasn't exactly been a good-luck story. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Not true. I'm listening. But many are taking this out of context. My alternator needed replacing, and I paid them $400 to do it. That's ALL I paid them to do. Not touch anything else, or do any other repairs. He moved the ground without asking, and I paid for that too. It isn't about paying for work that needs to be done. It's about paying for work that didn't NEED to be done until I brought it in.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
For the first sentence, so it seems. I figured like-minded car people might be more apt to have some sort of bond with regular members and want to be helpful. Some can't work around the size of their own egos. Since I do most of my own work, I honestly didn't know this was so common, OR that people didn't really care and just accepted when things like this happen. Contrary to how some are framing it, my original question was truly looking for opinions and not just trying to get others to agree with me. Since this thread started, I've truly started to change my position a bit. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I've heard pretty bad stuff about their products. I usually try to stick with OEM manufacturers - even if it isn't LR.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Its funny that you asked for opinion, and you got them. Then it's the entire world that's wrong but you.... lmao.
Apparently everyone's own ego is clouding their judgement but yours. classic
Anyone that buys a Range Rover as their beater automatically forfeits their right to complain about reliability and repair costs. It's like sticking your hand in a fire and complaining after you got burned. Dumb ideas usually yield costly results.

If you can afford to keep it going, go for it. I think that's the Beyond way
That would be a useful perspective if I was complaining about reliability and repair costs. But thanks for the contribution - I was legitimately waiting for you to take the opportunity to jump in.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I'd ask you to quote me where I said everyone else is wrong, but it would just be a waste of time, wouldn't it? I'd continue trying to take the time to explain facts and what I ACTUALLY said (even though it's all in black and white above) and you'll continue to blatantly ignore that and instead make up stories that will allow you to feel justified in persistently putting me down. You must win. Trust me - I get it. If there is one thing I learned about narcissists is that you will *never* get them to be better people. They are so caught up in themselves that despite not having any actual facts to back up their opinion, they instead double and triple down in their endless quest for superiority. They also want to have the last word. Which I assume is what this last post was intended for, but now that I've responded I imagine you're just itching to comment again. So, please do what you have to do, then I'll ignore it, and we can go on our merry way. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Anyway, for those who stated their opinions without being an asshole, thank you. The general consensus is to just accept whatever happens at a shop as the cost of doing business. Contrary to McLaren's alternate reality, I have decided to take this approach once it comes to paying the bill in a day or two.
If you put as much thought into your beater choices as your internet comeback essays you wouldn’t be in this mess.
