How would you protect yourself from not getting the item these days? PayPal? I've never bought anything from kijiji that wasn't local.

I haven’t been that desperate to buy from a local classified 3000 km away. I would ignore the ad.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If you already think this dude is a scammer, don't buy it.
If you somehow are sure he's not, e-transfer and yolo.
I don't think the guy is a scammer i just wanna cover my ass. Has nothing to do with desperation, there are none in Alberta or anywhere else close.
How about this: Under $500, e-transfer and relax.
Over $5000 use a lawyer for escrow.
Shit I dunno.
Lol it is under 500 but still. I figured there would be an easy way to cover my ass when doing this. No one has done this, that's surprising...This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Yeah the issue is that Kijiji is set up without the safeguards you'd want for this. They even mention that they reccomend all transactions be face to face. It's the wrong platform for long distance sales. So you face a risk using it.
You can always do COD. Yea that’s still a thing.

PayPal has protection for both buyer and seller. Just make sure to send using goods and services and NOT friends and family (no protection)
I've never bought, but I've sold stuff twice on kijiji to out of province buyers. One from BC, one from ON. They just e-transferrred/yolo'd it. Each was <$1500, and we either texted or spoke on the phone.
I sold a truck to a dude from Windsor, but the idiot flew to Calgary and paid cash. Ah those were the days.
I E-transferred a guy $125 to hold it and then $300 when my local contact picked the item up.
Definitely a gamble.
This is the best method. It will cost ~3%, but only way that offers protection. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I have never trusted PayPal for some reason. Can’t articulate why but the whole system has always seemed scammy to me.

Paypal has great protection for the buyer, but there are 3% fee's to pay via 'goods and services'. Seller has very little protection. Also Paypal friends and family has no protection for buyer, and has no fee's, so if the seller pushes that its most likely a scam.
Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and just hope the seller won't screw you. I've bought a lot of stuff from other provinces off Kijiji without issue. I'm more concerned that they think I'm scamming them for some reason. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Because if the buyer makes a claim, they always side with them and the seller loses out. For that reason alone, I won't use Paypal when selling. I even try to avoid using it when buying on principle too. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
no one on kijiji is going to accept PayPal. That's a normal scam that we get bombarded with all the time.
I agree if your not concerned about the seller just pay for it. Chat with the seller on the phone if needed. Overall I've done alot of selling with large payments paid up front and then shipped the item out.
When I chatted with this one guy in northern Alberta he said he wants to believe the world is filled with good people. He's never been ripped off. Guy paid $3500 up front and needed me to drop the item off at a specific shipping company that would get it to his farm.
Only real solution is to have someone you know in the town pay for the item and to pick it up and then ship it for you. Typically if I offer to meet someone's friend or family member to do the exchange the buyer offers to send the money to me direct just to ship.
I've done it a few times. Sold and purchased. <$1000
EMT for payments and communication is key. By phone and/or someone's work email (added layer of comfort) and a little bit of trust.
Trust your gut. Also depends what your trading.
Actually I've rented a place in Hawaii from Kijiji. She was a paralegal and sent me a contract from her work email, called me, and had me call the property management company to set things up. Over $2000 sent via EMT in two payments. No issues whatsoever.

Best way would be PayPal, 'pay for goods and services', the guy will need to pay a small percentage fee which you will likely need to compensate for but if the item doesn't make it at least you can file a dispute and most likely get your funds back.
