Why is that?

It seems like the majority of winter tires being sold are either high performance winters or non studded winter tires, not the severe service studded stuff. Most places dont get a ton of ice/packed down snow hanging around so studded tires arent generally big sellers.

Of the tires in the 2023 comparison that was linked, which ones are studded...

Not sure but tires like the Pilot Alpin 5 and Wintercontact are more performance winter tires compared to X Ice and Viking contact which are both superior winter tires.

I have a co-worker raving about the cheap tires at AB Tire. Seems to be all china-brands, but website prices are very low if that's what you want.

Yes... The X-Ice Snow line and the Viking Contact line are more severe condition service than the more performance driving lines like the Pilot Alpin series or the WinterContact series. That said, both of those are solid tires still, just not quite as sticky.

That does seem the case. I drive a LOT of icy and blizzard conditions and wouldn't ever get non studded again

Can you put X-Ice Snow on something like a TOyota 4Runner? They don't come up on the Michelin website as an option but they make it in the correct size.

You may have been looking at the passenger variant vs. the SUV version. Bob, are these two structurally different tires? Never understood the SUV vs. sedan distinction unless there is an obvious ply-increase for the SUV version.

SUV variant has a higher load rating. The one you linked are 115T while the regular X-ice in 17’s only goes up to a 103T. Each tire can handle about 600lbs more.

Actually that is not correct... Many standard X-Ices have higher load carrying capacities than 103... The load carrying capacity is more a product of the size than the model and is based on the vehicles that are using these sizes.

Really, most SUV variants are more about where the reinforcing is being utilized in the tire build to deal more with aspects that are a bit more unique to SUV like usually having a higher centre of gravity and cornering characteristics are a bit different and things like that.

For example, the 265/70R17 is an X-Ice Snow and not branded the SUV and has a 115 capacity...
