87 with any boost is risky. I'd love to see the manual stating 87 is ok. What's the compression ratio on those cars? 7:1? Haha.

While I do agree premium fuel is better. I remember reading somewhere that all vehicles sold in Canada must be able to run off 87 without damage to the engine. I'm too lazy to find a link.

The P0300 set at 64% engine load, with timing of 16 degrees BTDC. Right now not a whole lot is being asked of the fuel. If the codes set with 130% engine load and like 30 degrees BTDC I would look at the fuel. The engine module is going to advance timing until it knocks then back it off, so he may feel a reduction in power with 87 fuel.

Well I would say 87 is probably fine if you stay out of boost but lets be serious lol.

I agree with Flexray. Today's ecu's are rather idiot proof and with a CEL on its in a safe mode. I'd be surprised if you can even build boost.
Still, clear the codes. Drive normally off boost. See what codes come up if any. Do that for a day. Then if no codes, add a bit of boost and see if any codes happen.

Repost and we can help reassess.

Drive off boost lol. This car couldn't get out of it's own way without a turbo. He'd be going walking speed everywhere if he wanted to stay out of boost.

To be fair, the manual calls for 87 for the turbo. It’s tuned to run 87, with little to no benefits running any higher.

I still cant believe how many people here think 87 is some kind of poison for an engine. Any modern engine can run it with a decrease in HP (minor) and mileage (likely more noticeable)

Lots of cars say 87 is safe while 91 or 93 is recommended for full performance.

Doesn’t mean it’s tuned for 87, it means it capable of adjusting.

I think all of my 91 octane+ cars say that in some fashion.

    I agree with the above.

The guy posts an actual relevant trouble shooting post on a car forum and the Beyond jackal's can't resist trying to insult the guy with a bunch of BS.

Safe for 87 as a manufacturers recommendation literally means it's tuned for 87.

The computer would have multiple spark tables and it picks the correct one based on any knock it picks up. Run 87, it pulls timing. Run 93, it adds timing.

Cars are designed this way with warranty. Why would a manufacturer recommend something that could be detrimental to the engine? This isn't 1987 anymore.
    I like neat cars.

Thanks tips. The manual says nothing about 91, it literally says 87 octane is the recommended fuel period. I was at the unveiling when it first came out in Detroit I think, and Hyundai made a big deal about how they designed the engine around 87 octane to give performance while saving money. It's designed to run on 87 octane. I'm sure you can chip it and get more performance out of 91 by turning up the boost, but stock it's a 87 octane car.

edit, looking up the actual manual, in Europe it's 91 AKI (95 RON) minimum but it can run lower octane for lower performance (what you're talking about), meaning they actually have a higher performance tune from the factory. Outside Europe it's 87 AKI (91 RON) minimum. We use AKI here which is (RON+MON)/2 in case you're confusing the numbers.

Sorry. When I hear turbo I expect it's aftermarket and tuned on 91 at minimum.

    Never driven a Velocity-monster (Veloster).

Cleared codes yesterday, filled up with 87, drove about 200 kilometres around the city and no codes. I still booked an appointment for Monday to have someone look at it.

Got the diagnosis from the shop this morning.

We found it needs a purge valve and all four injectors that is why there is a misfire the purge valve is $189.86

The injectors we would be looking at $1406.63

In total for everything including tax we would be $1872.63
So in the past month I spent $6000 on this car but I can't trade it in because it'll be 6 months to order a new one. It literally probably would have been cheaper to donate it.
