    Default Alternative Home Internet providers

Other than Rogers/Shaw/Telus, who do you like?

Been hearing adverts for Oxio. https://oxio.ca/en

It runs off Shaw network. I pay Shaw less for the same plan. Whats even the point?

Any 3rd party provider will either feed off Telus or Shaw and will generally require you to purchase a modem for use.

If they have issues due to Telus or Shaw infrastructure issues then you are still at their mercy.

At the end of the day it makes no difference and sticking with Telus or Shaw is easier and just works.

Also I am paying the same price as Oxio for 1000 as I do Shaw

I’ve been with Lightspeed (Shaw reseller) for 6 years now on a $50 / 300mbit plan. So far haven’t had any real issues, once every 3-6 months I do have to reboot my modem / router but I think it’s my router itself is getting old. Haven’t actually had to call in ever and no promos to hop to keep the price.

Same. Oxio is about $8/month more than Shaw after all the taxes and fees for the same speeds.

Also I can't support a company with this stupid illustration and talking about sustainable anything when it comes to internet. Talk to me when it's cage-free and no antibiotics.

I don't see why a cheaper alternative wouldn't be available and encouraged by the monopoly.
Other industries have several alternatives that run the mother ship's product/service at a cheaper rate.

Becuase making companies resell their infrastructure gets conned to Canadians as competition.

That doesn't stop it from happening and doesn't prevent lower prices.
It sounded like others were arguing "it can't be cheaper because Shaw owns the cables and they won't under sell themselves" and that's incorrect.

If you were in good with a few neighbours, I'd get starlink then setup my own cash and carry internet business.

    Happy New Year -

Starlink is good, they issue Canadian IP addresses, not good if you are looking for US content ....
WestNet is pretty good if you are in their coverage area. They do not use the incumbent's network. They have their own dedicated network they rolled out in the 2000s.
and of course to be an internet company you have to peer with other companies..

They focus more on commercial internet.

I got my parents onto rural Telus mobile internet. 5G with unlimited data for $80 a month. We debated Starlink but it's almost double the cost and just didn't make sense for how much they use the internet anyways.

Only reason is no song and dance every 2 years to keep it below these guys. That said, Shaw just gave me 300Mbps for $50/mth and free for the 1st year which is fine for my parents.

Interested in how the works for them and speeds they see. Previously, co-workers complained about a lot of disruptions and poor speed. It's why I went directly to starlink, but as you mentioned it's double the cost.

It's the ratcheting the price up every year that ended me paying Shaw or Telus.
Lightspeed has been the same price for me since 2019 and still is.

Teksavvy is selling itself off, so I've jumped ship back to Rogers/shaw. Its too bad because Teksavvy has been solid for me for eight years.

Technicolor cable modem can go over a year without reset, impressive.
    Cocoa $11,000 per ton.

Wouldn't you know it, the second I go back on Shaw/Rogers, they throw me onto a Technicolor CGM4141.

I'm using Freedom home internet. $63/month with tax for 150MB/s. Shaw's network.

For awhile they dropped the requirement to be a Freedom Mobile customer for their home internet and at the time this was the cheapest for reasonable speeds.
