Default Mandatory to identify your race?

Is it good or bad to have your race written on your drivers license? It's being considered here in Alberta.

Maybe I'm a negative Nellie, but I can imagine someone being excluded from some bar or liquor store because they "don't look like that race". Seems to just create more opportunity for judgement, since humans will continue to judge on appearances.

Also a potential for individuals to self-identity deliberately incorrectly, for some unpleasant purpose. Don't like that.

I'm perfectly capable of judging someone based on their appearance without checking their drivers license, thank you very much.

"I think it's a big step in equity as Indians have to carry a treaty status card, which identifies our race. So I think it's a step in equity for other Albertans," said commissioner Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse.
Isn’t it better to eliminate the Indian Treaty Status card if you want equality?

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but they absolutely do not have to carry a treaty status card at all times. Only for when they want the benefits of using said card.

If you want equity, how about we stop having treaty status?

    edit: beaten to the punch

If I identify as a white will the KKK finally let me into the Red Deer chapter? I'm a big fan of pointy hats.

You only need the status card if you want special treatment.

You are welcome to leave the card at home and live by the same rules as everyone else any time you want.

Too hard to implement. Many people are say 3/16ths or 5/32nds of dominant race.

Sure, there are some people that are pure mozarella cheese, but there are a heck of a lot of people pineapple mushroom with extra anchovies.

What if they left it up to the registries? So when you went to renew your license, the person behind the counter makes the race determination, and they base it ENTIRELY on skin colour.

that article is so brief and lazily written that it leaves more questions then it answers. At no point does it clarify how this data is going to help other than Indians need a status card so everyone should have a similar card and it will help them with African Canadian communities but doesn't say why they can't help them right now.

Shows how out of touch our police force is with reality.

I think there's a push to collect race-based statistics of "police interactions" to prove, or reduce, systematic racism.
But, I actually don't think this will help that goal.

I'm also certain that the statistics for what races are convicted of crimes will not be random or equal. So that's going to get ugly.

So the cops will know how to not treat their perp as equally as they would a person of a different race.

If the problem is racist cops, I don't see how this helps.

I’ve been self identifying as black for years now. About time it’s recognized.
