    Default Furnace

    Hey guys,

I have an old 70s/80s dinosaur furnace and a Honeywell Lyric T5 thermostat. Sometimes my thermostat will show 23 degrees and the house will be really hot, other times it'll show 25 but the house will seem cold. Any ideas what could be the issue if there's even one? or am i tripping

Furnace too large, house temps uneven. Run the fan continuously.

Or buy more sensors and drive yourself totally insane. Sensors don't help anything, but they can keep you busy and waste your money. Double benefit.

Seems hot and seems cold is invalid data. Does not compute.

I have a Lyric T5 and while I've been lucky, a golden rule is that 99.8% of Honeywell products are unreliable trash.

Look up if there's a calibration procedure or it's most likely just "unplug it and do reset" to see if that helps.

ExtraSlow fan-on idea is also good idea, as usual.

Why do you say that? I haven't had any (other) issues with it.

Nothing to comment on the furnace/thermostat issue but I bought a few of these and put one on each floor of my house to keep an eye on a more accurate temperature and humidity level, good for peace of mind and help sorting out any temp/humidity issues.

Booked in a furnace tuneup with Just in time for today, got a call this morning they're short staffed and had a few emergencies of people having no heat so got pushed to next week. Quite frustrating, swear every home service company I've tried using always cancels at least once.

But seriously, I also just have a floor fan to move air around the house a bit better. Seems to reduce the temperature complaints.

Check the installer setup to make sure you have everything set. Forced air, standard efficiency, differential to auto or 1. Make sure the scheduling makes sense, this is the number one issue I see with programmable thermostats. Most people don't realize they have 4 active events or more in thermostat, and they will say stuff like " it gets to 28c at 10:30 then 20c at 1pm". I go into the setup and its set for 28c at 10am and 20c at 12pm, the thermostat is just doing what its told to do.
You can play with the cycle rate in the installer menu, it should be around 6 for an old furnace, with the fan control settings of 140 on, 110 off.
Another thing is thermostat placement. Not in sun, centrally located, as close to a RETURN air, not directly over a register like all the bonehead residential electricians like to do these days, because the pipe chase for the supply ducts makes it so easy to run to the basement.

Mostly see it in retrofits where they hire someone to pull an 18/8 for new equipment and IAQ devices. The other trouble with the chase mounting, is that leak joints in the ducting blow warm air into the chase, it then comes through hole in the drywall and it makes the thermostat read wonky.
In real difficult situations with houses that are multilevel split or open concept with a lot of windows, I've put in thermostats with wireless sensors and or pendants that can be moved around the house until a good spot can be found to sense from, or can be moved with the seasonal changes. You can also do sensor averaging with multiple sensors on some thermostats. I had one of the good but now discontinued Honeywell focuspro pendant kits in my house but I ended up selling it to a customer who wanted the temperature to be the same in whatever room she was in. They have redlink T series replacement, but I'm not a fan of the T4 through T6 series stuff, too many relay problems. The Visionpro and the 9000 series though is pretty solid kit.
