Default Slow wired internet - Desktop computer - Wifi still fast

How should I go about diagnosing a slow internet connection on my home desktop computer? Not an ISP issue, as Wifi devices (phones, tablets and laptops) are getting full speed. Just seems to be a problem with this one desktop computer that is using a wired connection.

Desktop is not in the same room as the ISP Model and Asus router, so there are a lot of wires and connections in between. Could that be it?

Thoughts and suggestions on a diagnostic procedure?

Does your wired connection say gigabit?

If it doesn’t there could be a broken pair in the cable somewhere. And it’s negotiating down to 10mbit

Not sure where it's supposed to "say gigabit" but I realized I have a spare long Cat6 cable to run down the hall directly to the modem, and yeah that fixes the issue.
Getting a full 177/177 which is fine for my 150 Fibre connection.

Shit, now I need to diagnose this. Guess carrying my laptop around and testing various wired locations is the next step.

It’s buried somewhere in network settings. You should be able to see what the connection is negotiated at ( 10, 100, 1000 mbps).

If a pair is broken somewhere it will compensate, but at cat3 speeds.

Is this a new phenomenon? Most likely it’s occurring at the termination point on one side or another, best bet is to reterminate the cable in new keystone jacks.

But I agree you need to figure out where the issue is first.

I know it seems obvious, but sometimes even intelligent people miss the obvious.

The same (long) wire you went directly to the modem, in your normal wired computer wall port gives the same poor speeds?

Desktop was getting 9/9. Mobile is 90+

Might have it narrowed down to a specific wire. If I'm right, it's the in-wall wiring. Still testing.

those consumer grade rj45 wall jacks always fail, the wires never stay properly seated, i bet the problem is the female wall jack, pull it out and re-seat the wires, re-test and then try it out with the computer.

Check to see if all the cables are 568A or 568B. It probably urban legend, but some say that its just a better idea to use all north american or all european wiring.

If there is one bad run, try the other wiring for that one run.

Just like mains electricity I have no idea why they went different. It was probably *just* to be different.

There's an interesting history behind NA being 120V vs most of the rest of the world, if that's what you mean

So, I have some unmanaged switches in my home LAN, and one in particular down in my basement near the breaker where all the house wiring terminates has eight ports and was full. So I had been meaning to swap that out for a larger 16 port one, to allow more connections, and maybe future expansion. So I did that, just while thinking about other things. And now that everything is all connected back up, I'm getting 95 mbps at this wired desktop now. Hmmmmm, interesting. So that's clearly fast enough for what I'm doing with my life, but also, noticeably slower than the 177 I am getting at the modem.

So, this is now "solved" in any kind of practical sense, but sort of a larger mystery than it was before now. It doesn't matter, but it's bothering me even more now! Don't seem to have any cables that have a discontinuous pair. Was the old switch slowing me down, that seems crazy. It was a Gigabit switch.

so, really doesn't matter, but I may budget some more time over the weekend to do more detective work.

You can also run the command prompt:
wmic NIC where NetEnabled=true get Name,Speed

    Result:

Termination may still be broken, but now it's less broken because you moved it. Or old switch has a broken port. Put it back in, reconnect and see if you get 100. Cheap switches also have questionable backplanes - e.g. for a 4 port switch to actually provide full duplex 1Gbps you need an 8Gbps backplane, which they never specify.

I guess you could try connecting only the computer in question and the router to the switch and see what the performance is.

And ethernet cables suck. There's a reason why everybody in the enterprise space has moved to fiber cabling.
