    Default Battery Tender recommendations

Hey so I did a search and saw a few things but a bit generic in content.

Got a vehicle that's sitting till spring in a non heated garage. battery was dead to the point couldn't be charged. Warrantied the battery and trying to figure out how best to prevent it from dying again. I want to start the car occasionally to run for a few mins and its with in-laws who aren't capable of reconnecting/disconnecting the battery as needed. It also has a trunk mount battery so a little more complicated to run wiring (I guess).

    I was looking at these:

    https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B072JZFY2N/...ing=UTF8&psc=1

    https://www.amazon.ca/NOCO-GENIUS2-F...13447228&psc=1

Thinking of hard wiring to the posts with ring connector and then just running a cord out window etc? I don't know if that's the right path so looking for advice. Also open to other suggestions than those above.

Should also add I have one of these as well:

    https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/m...p.html?loc=plp

I don't know if its good to leave it plugged in for weeks on end though?

    Thanks y'all

I have the NOCO myself and works good as a trickle charger. In charge mode though it heats up ALOT. I'd say to only use it as a trickle charger.

I also want to say that I got it from Crappy tire and it was less than $50. (I think).

If you have the room, I'd also suggest quick release battery terminals:

The Noco is ok. I have a CTEK that does the job well.

    General comments:
    1. Under no circumstance should you start the car and run it for a few mins. Or even 30 mins. Don't start the car unless you intend to take it for a drive. Starting, idling, then shutting it off is bad and doesn't help in any way.
    2. Plug it in and leave it all winter if you want. That's the whole point of getting a tender/smart charger. Wiring up some connectors with a plug on the end is a great idea.

I am on team ctek as well, but I have a NOCO booster which is also a great product.

Noco, ctek or the original battery tender brand are all fine, get the smallest one that's on sale because tending doesn't take much power.

BUT BUT BUT DO Not periodically start the vehicle over the winter. There is zero benefit, and many drawbacks. Leave it dormant until spring.

Can you just remove the battery and store it somewhere at room temperature along with a trickle charger?

This is the best scenario, but I would say not to do it in your house. Vapours, possible leakage, chance of fire. Your home insurance might have questions.

Ok so either of those will work then? Copy on not running it till spring. What's the downside of that? Not enough time for anything beneficial?

Modern batteries can’t be that susceptible to fire can they?

I think there is value in keeping the electronics energized in a modern vehicle.

I was thinking more along the lines of the battery is in a closet charging and a wire hanger drops on it.

Ctek has never let me down. Get a high end model and use it for charging too.
Definitely my battery has lasted longer with a ctek than other tenders or chargers.

I have the MOTOPOWER one from Amazon plugged into my bike right now. Seems to be ok. Been there since the snow came.

That’s some final destination type accidents.

I'm sure there are more drawbacks, but the main one I'm aware of is it causes moisture to build in the oil. The oil can't get hot enough to burn off the moisture without going on a decent drive. And the only benefit might be charging the battery, but the battery tender does it for you.

Sure, but there's no advantage to this. And it has the likely disadvantage of doing things to the electronics on your car, like killramos said. Batteries are ok being cold if they're on a tender.

I have a noco and it does the job. I will still drive my "summer" car in the winter as I have winter tires on it but its too low to drive on big snowy days and the poly bushings don't like super cold weather. Only time i start it is to drive it on a chinook day.

Does anyone believe that AGM batteries should have or "require" different battery chargers?
