Still waiting for Rage to take us all to Nick's

Went to Longview for the first time, and whilst it was enjoyable, I would have a hard time calling it worth the drive.
I can eat more hot wings than you.

I've found that Longview is worth every penny and the agonizing wait. I wish I was organized enough to go several times per year.
And let's be clear, "the drive" is roughly 30 min from the farthest portion of Calgary. It's not like you had to drive 120 min to get there.

It was a good experience for me, but I kind of agree. I find you gotta go when it's still bright or else no point. I went during the winter and was still able to enjoy the nice view. Saw some second seatings where it was already dark and I wouldn't do that as the food on its own is not justifyable. It's more of an overall package.

I like eating in the country, but that place is 40 minutes past heritage pointe, and over an hour drive for anyone who lives north of downtown. It better be beating places like Rouge and The River Café pretty handily to make it worthwhile. I actually think the River Cafe is underrated and a sneaky decent value for lunch.

Lol driving to Longview for a meal. Fuck that. No food or atmosphere can be that good.

While in some ways I get that mentality.

I have driven further for dumber reasons.

We went to River Café for the wife's bday a week ago, I agree with underrated and, while the walk from parking off the island was nice going in, coming out to pouring rain was less delightful. We got soaked, fortunately the rain was warm and made for comical photos, plus her white dress...well

Actually, if you want to get drunk in style, that river cafe patio is an excellent place to spend a summer afternoon as well.

I can't exactly explain why, but I always have a great time at Gyu Kaku. Usually I will go with some friends for a party/celebration

Gyu Kaku is one of my favourite casual dining experiences in Calgary. I used to be there #1 customer haha. Harami skirt steak is so good..

Italian farmhouse is a great spot and nice short drive for a birthday dinner too.

Since you guys love going out of town to eat, I'd also suggest Pasu Farm for brunch. In the winter especially, the view is quite nice.

Schott's Lake was also a great outing.

Has anyone had the omakase at Nupo? Curious how expensive market-price typically is...

Yeah, it’s much more reasonable than Eight… but it’s still big money, especially if you’re hungry and order extra pieces afterwards… which I have had to every time to feel satisfied (but you know how I can eat haha)

A night at Shokunin is usually the way to go, they still have a limited sushi menu and the cooked stuff is great, best bang for your Darren bucks.

We had an omakase in Japan and the counter experience was fantastic. The meal itself was pretty darn expensive, but interestingly all the sake was equiv. $3.30/glass! This was also a michelin restaurant...

So for a special occasion, it would be nice to do that again if I know roughly the price ahead of time.

I'll have to give Shokunin another try. After we all went awhile ago, nothing really left me itching to go back.

It’s $165/person + $15 drinks + $10-15/piece extra sushi… so safe to say like $500/couple… all out Shokunin is like $300/couple and Eight is closer to $800 with pairing/couple

Thanks. That's actually cheaper than most reservable-omakase we encountered in Japan. Prices ranged from $150-500/pp. At some point there are grossly diminishing returns, if any.

In no universe will I ever deem EIGHT worthwhile going to unless I'm not paying. I've read on the FB foodies group people spending >$1,000 for a couple after taxes and tip. In Calgary? That's hilarious. This isn't Lyon ffs
