Whats the best case scenario here? Your friend gets an extra week of paid severance?

People need to think about effort required for perceived value. Christ

It’s also a civil case so it’ll be years before it makes it to court.

I'll take "noisey anti-vaxxer eventually gets their comeuppance" for $800.

Considering the OP this sounds accurate

Saw that on the news last night. Honestly I think she will have a case, particularly if she was upfront about her 'situation' in the interview and they still hired her.

Anecdotally, from female friends, they find previous generation female bosses the worst because they're usually bitter, single, and workaholics.

It's a bad look for the team no matter what the facts of the case end up being. She was hired for a job she had experience doing, and was publicly praised for her work by the coach, then she was fired.

If there was a performance issue, I think it's clear it could have been handled better. If there wasn't, I hope she gets paid big time for their fuckup.

Tell him to research his heritage. If he can whip out a status card he can whip out his dick too, then just lay back and enjoy.

Yes...not clear whom else would be involved. Post skimming has made me it's bitch before, why should today be any different?

No one understands the profoundly racist thing that was said.
And that's probably for the best.

I believe the concern was he thought it was 2 weeks for every year but I guess that was an oil and gas industry thing. Looks like he qualfies for EI which is good for now. Mortgage industry is pretty slow as it is so maybe they are just cleaning house as he was on salary and commission.

Employers who end their employee’s employment must give the employee, and ensure they receive, written termination notice.

An employer must give written notice to their employee of at least:

Table 2. Employer notice period needed for length of employment
    Notice period Length of employment
1 week More than 90 days but less than 2 years
2 week 2 years but less than 4 years
4 week 4 years but less than 6 years
5 week 6 years but less than 8 years
6 week 8 years but less than 10 years
8 week 10 years or more
    https://www.alberta.ca/termination-pay.aspx

So in lieu of notice, he got the 1 week minimum. Typically, companies will give more to get you to shut up and sign the release, but its not a requirement.

It doesn't have to go to court unless no law was broken, and his friend wants some sort of compensation anyway.

If a company is doing anything which is against the law, all it takes is a contact to the labour board (Alberta Employee Standards) and any outstanding funds can be released in days or weeks. (Ask me how I know!) Really, if someone feels like they were wronged, that's the first place they should be going. A lot easier if the company broke government rules and can be ordered to pay what they owe under the law.

Otherwise, it's a civil matter and yes, it can take years. Given the information provided, I don't think that is an option and even if it is, isn't likely advantageous to try.

I really don't know what law was broken. He got a bit of severance, it really wouldn't have been different if he was laid off.

You want to stay home and get paid, perhaps the public service would be a better fit.

    That depends if you're qualified.
