WTB: Reliable all wheel drive SUV or car for a single mom

Hi, I'm trying to help a friend of mine look for a reliable and gas efficient vehicle for use in the States. She does lots of highway driving and so needs something good on gas as she needs to watch her monthly $. Looking for something under $15k, but the cheaper the better. Would like something that will last her a bit without having to drop major dollars into.

I know this is fairly broad but please let me know what you may have.
