It's clearly, clearly, clearly not working correctly when it's trying to show me videos in a few different languages that I don't speak, let alone the content missing the mark by 180°.
I have hit "Don't Recommend Channel" on probably 100 videos since January 1. It may be getting slightly better, but I don't think so.
I am considering deleting all history at some point.

Sounds like your usual channels have been decimated by 2023 Adpocalyse. IE what you used to watch isn't ad friendly or has been flagged.

Canada's welcomed ~3MM immigrants in the last decade. I doubt a large percentage of those immigrants are English or French speaking...

It's not like I'm doing nothing. I'm actively clicking "Don't suggest this channel again" or "Not interested / Tell us why / I don't like this video" dozens of times, daily.

But, Hell - it's not working because I'm still getting heaps of lame video games, BS music and seven more recently Room Renovation transformational bullshit. Oh, and don't forget about the Old Whores Talking About Soup!

So I added 4 new subscriptions that are equally as misaligned with these BS selections as all my current subscriptions are.
I just added Veritasium, Tom Scott, Hoonigan and 30 Rock.
Let's wait to see if there is a change.

Youtube and Google are both insanely accurate for searches. People don't remember the days of dialup and Altavista, where you would do a search on cute cats, and you would get a Llama every fifth search.

If you get a Ru Paul video, maybe the AI knows more about you than you know about yourself.

However: TikTok takes it to another level compared to Youtube search. Chinese tech is superior in that respect.

This has gotten way way better since I took ExtraSlow's advice and added 4 new subscriptions. It's still bad, but not absolutely intolerable. The only other change I made was more frequently selecting "Not interested" plus the additional selection after "I don't like the video".

So, that's been a small improvement.
Here's a recent hilarious miss, though:
