2025 Updates for the WestJet Rewards program

Some of them are good imo...especially for those of us who can easily hit platinum regardless of the qualification going up (i've always said it was too easy)

Now take away lounge access for any bum with a credit card, ban pets in cabin and we'll be heading in the right direction

Agreed these are largely good updates. I've complained for a long time that their status was too easy to get/Gold benefits were disproportionate to the qualifying spend.

WJ status will still be relatively easy to get, but I'm optimistic that this means their elevation lounge won't be packed to the fucking tits all the time.

well i'm at 7500 qual spend this year so I disagree with the platinum tier threshold. Should be 9000 not 10k. Basically you want me to spend $10k to sit in a non-lie flat seat, get a paper table cloth, and eat a shit tier meal equiv of econo class. And the lounge outside of YYC is plaza premium which is worse than sitting in a urinal trough.

I am good with all of it minus the milestone rewards change, I like getting them every $2k. For next year I was planning on limiting my Westjet spend to the minimum for Platinum and focus more on Air Canada status.

What flights are you buying and how?

On Econoflex fares (which is all I purchase) 100% of the fare goes to tier qualifying, so when your typical flight to Toronto is costing near on $1000 each way, a couple of round trips there and a quick jaunt to Grande Prairie at $500 each way would have you in Gold previously

In 2022, I hit platinum by February and my overall yearly spend was $30,000 by the end of the year, I also hit 25K with Air Canada that year which was stupid as I should have just kept building the WJ dollars tbh

Yeah if you fly the cheapest fares, discount vacation packages etc, it sure doesn't add up.

I can't even make silver, but that's because it's pretty much all cheap flights.

Mini-rant, it sucks that your kids flights don't count for your status. Not like those munchkins are real humans, but the spend is real, and should be given to the adult that books the tickets and flys beside them.

IRL I use all my companion vouchers on my kid so they indeed do not accumulate status.

At least hotels let me hoard all the status.

If you spend the extra on tickets over basic fare to get the rewards earn but you use Westjet dollars to pay for the flight, do you still get the reward earn or are you paying more for nothing?

*Edit* Answering my own question: "The following are not eligible toward tier qualifying spend: UltraBasic fares, Member Exclusive fares, contracted fares, tour operator fares, WestJet Vacations group package bookings, partner-marketed flights, ancillary partner bookings made on westjet.com, WestJet Vacations land-only bookings, gift cards, taxes, fees, charges, and any portion paid with WestJet dollars or any other reward program redemption."

So don't do what I do and pay for econo expecting rewards earn if you're going to use Westjet dollars.
