The apple is better if you want a smart watch for smart watch functions. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
For fitness tracking - no way. And it's ugly.
Really? I think the new ones are pretty sweet looking. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I think for fitness tracking they are all in the ballpark. Like if an Apple Watch is 95% accurate and Fitbit or Garmin is 99%... is that extra bit of accuracy going to make a difference in your fitness journey? Doing a couple 'fork put downs' will have more of an effect. Or just being consistent with getting walks or whatever in each day.
I was looking at getting a Garmin Fenix 6 until the AW Ultra came out, now I think I'm back on the Apple Watch wagon
I find a smartwatch acting as an extension of your phone to be an annoyance. I have a phone. I dont need a watch. But this is a personal taste thing. Same with the looks. I hate the square look - but that's just me.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The bigger problem is the battery life of the AW, and the sapphire amoled screen of the Garmins which can be always-on.
The new AW Ultra is pretty slick.
That said I am an android guy, so apple can suck it.
Garmin 4 lyfe.
What, not an apple guy? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
You don't like janky SMS support, a playmobil UX, annoying proprietary connectors and Samsung's last-year screen?
I think I had a gripe about the pixel watch somewhere. Short story, wife liked fitbits, thought pixel watch was "just a better fitbit", didn't realize it was a whole different class of device. Took a couple weeks, but shes happy with it now.
Still, if you want a fitbit, get a fitbit, not a smartwatch. Don't fuck around.
Agreed, I turned off phone and message notifications a month after getting mine. I don't need to be that connected. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I went through this recently and still haven't figured out a solution. I returned my Ultra as well because I just wasn't using it.
For watches I like my regular mechanical watches so don't see myself wearing an Apple Watch/Garmin watch long term. What I want is something somewhat discrete or simple enough (not a watch) that I can use on my other wrist for fitness tracking purposes alone. Any suggestions on what I should be looking at?
Oura ring? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
this is a good solution, althought i dont know how much fitness tracking the oura does? Mostly body status type stuff i think. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I want my watch to look like a watch, so I'm not the biggest Apple watch/fitbit fan for that reason.
I'm also an android user, so that basically excludes Apple watch.
I like tracking things like training readiness and stress in the Garmin app. Fitbit it pretty garbage at that.
I went from a Fitbit Charge 5 to a Garmin Fenix 7S and I'm pretty stoked.

I have seen it but never considered seriously due to have bad experience with what was called a MOTIV ring. I had that several years ago and after keeping it stored for a couple of months tried it again and it refused to charge. Maybe Oura one will be better I guess. But I also don't like wearing rings and only wear my wedding ring so it would be worn instead of a wedding ring. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
EDIT: Just looked at the Oura ring again and it's fucking subscription based app. I absolutely abhor subscription based services when you're already paying a premium for the item itself. Fuck that.

What are you actually using it to track? Garmin is infinitely better for things like biking/mtb/hiking/ski touring/etc.

However, as good as Ultra is for most existing Apple Watch users (or more mainstream prospective users), it falls short when it comes to features that you would need to complete an actual ‘ultra’ – that is, a long distance running race, or trek, or really any adventure in the backcountry. These gaps fall into a couple of different camps. Sure, there’s the bugs like the openwater swim one, or the disappearing compass backtrack one. I’m less concerned about those at the moment. Instead, it’s the navigational feature gaps, and sensor pairing/broadcasting gaps that are more key for Apple.
Despite taking the Apple Watch Ultra on this grand 14-hour Alps adventure yesterday, it didn’t actually serve much of a purpose. Meaning, it wasn’t the one navigating me to the finish line, pacing me up 3-hour climbs, or helping me find my way in the pitch-black dark. My Garmin Epix watch was. The Apple Watch was (mostly) dutifully recording that trek, but it wasn’t providing much actionable information

Affordability isn't an issue. It's the principle. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I think Fitbit fitness bands (not watch) is likely what I need to look into for my purpose.
so if they charged $100 more, but removed the sub, then you would buy the ring? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Yea I think so. If the item itself is worth it then for sure. I just don't like per month bullshit. I am ok getting screwed the one time when buying an overpriced piece of tech, don't wanna be reminded about it monthly.
