    Default 2023 f1

I will kick this off considering the new season is upon us.

HAAS livery out today, like the blacked out one over the white one for sure.

Only 1 pre season test this year, right before the season opener. Last years 2 tests still created enough chaos and took 1/3 of the season or more to get on top of issues for top teams. Let’s hope for more chaos as long as it’s rbr struggling.

I don’t see rbr having an issue out of the gate, I think the issue will be is the car good enough with limited development time in season to keep up

I wasn't keeping up after such an exciting 2021 year with that cool final race where the director guy was so awesome. How did 2022 end?

Which one's Lewis? Is LEC short for Lewis?

I thought Lewis was British but this sign says the British guy is Russian.
Does Lada sponsor a team now?!

    Too confusing. Going to bed.

The Haas livery has always been pretty slick. I quite liked the Rich Energy design up until it all turned into a scam.

The question is: How many more seasons does F1 have (at least as we know it)?

I bet it's fewer than people think.

    What changes are you pondering?

I mean, it's been around since 1946 and they're planning on 100% renewable fuels for 2026 (I expect that to be pushed later but we'll see) so outside of the regulation/rule changes, team/ownership changes, track changes, and FIA/Liberty Media relationship/ownership changes which have always existed... I think it will continue on for another several decades with just as much drama as there's always been.

    - Companies won't want to invest sponsorship and R+D dollars into tech that they are not trying to market to the public. Win on sunday, sell on monday doesn't make economic sense when the sell on monday is a fundamentally different tech than the race series. Car companies are too realistic and ruthless about that nowadays. The new prospective manufacturers teams in F1 will want to push for the transition away from ICE asap - they want to align their racing tech with their overall marketing efforts. Which sure as shit ain't ICE.

    - The speed of a car and the sound they make is largely no longer a differentiator - a point I've been making for a while. So they entire purpose of winning a race is a bit antiquated in general - at least from a marketing perspective. I mean nobody cares how fast a Lambo is now, that's why people are needing to make them some disgusting green color with blue stripes and giant wings.

    - Drive to Survive hasn't created "fans of racing" so much as provided a fantastic platform to fuel peoples' nightmare addiction to reality television. Hell my sister in law is a big DTS fan, and never bothers to watch the races.

Counterpoint. Manufactures are doing everything they can to get in the series. Sponsorship has always been broad. It was tough after tobacco ban, but f1 has pivoted well into tech space. It’s a branding exercise now, not win on Sunday sell on Monday. That hasn’t rung true since the 80s really. Look at Ferrari haha.

Sure, but that isn't too far off of my point. It's going to be an EV/Tech billboard thing. Which is pretty much how the car market in general is going: giant cell phones with wheels.

The racing, and the physicality of it contributes to the story, and thus the product. You can not get anywhere close to the physicality of F1 with EVs. Without the physicality of it, you’d end up with nascar.

I’d even argue that nascar has better drama than f1.

If you can bet on it, there'll always be a market for it.

It's racing series based on an outmoded form of transportation, with no direct monetization for the manufacturers available. The average consumer has no hope of owning anything even approaching the vehicles they see racing so there's no showroom bump for wins. Technology has moved on and left the series behind. Surely it can't hang around much longer and will be defunct within our lifetimes.

Formula 1? Oh wait, sorry, I was thinking of the Kentucky Derby.

Rules can change to limit engine development and R&D dollars can flow into Energy Recovery System and Aero which will remain relevant for EVs.

That's been the case for a long time already. They make rules changes to slow the cars down. Moving to smaller engines and cars would be great if the material tech can advance enough to keep them safe...

F1 has always had its ebbs and flows in popularity. Even if only 10-20% of the current new "DTS" fan base stick around, it's still a much larger fan base than existed 5 years ago.
