Kind of on topic, I am looking at this for a carry on for 3-5 day trips here and there but not sure about the size. "Carry on compliant for most airlines" but it's larger than Westjet stated dimensions of 21" x 15" x 9". Wondering if because it's soft it would be ok.....it's 22" x 12.5 x 11.5in.

Probably depends on how full you pack it. Softsided helps but some of the bins in older planes are a tight fit. I've seen a few instances lately where people have gone to the gate with a larger sized carry on bag and have been forced to gate check it. Airlines are getting very strict now as it's a good revenue generator for them. This bag is quite a bit larger than the standard carry on size so you might get some attention at the gate if it's full.

I've been doing lots of 3-5 day trips for work lately and have been trying out various bags trying to find the perfect one. I'm almost dialed into the Topo Designs travel bag (I've got the 30L and the 40L) as being perfect for fitting in any overhead bin and also being able to pack a lot of stuff. The Patagonia black hole bags also seem great but I haven't tried one.

@Pacman do you use the 30 or 40 mostly? That bag also comes in a 30

I think the 40L makes sense over the 30L as the 40L will easily fit in any overhead bin and neither will fit under a seat so there really isn't any benefit to the 30L unless the actual size while using as a backpack is an issue. I got the 30L first as it was on sale, used it and felt a bit more space would be great. My wife started using the 30L which was perfect for her so I used that as an excuse to get the 40L. I packed for vegas for a full week using the 30L, but that was shorts, t-shirts etc. I can stuff a thin suit jacket, dress shirts, pants in the 40L and go for 3-4 days no problem. Anything over 4 days or if it requires more suit jackets and I just check a suitcase. I did buy some underwear that's quite thin and synthetic as they take up less space. I don't take extra shoes (size 13 feet) so I wear a pair of dress boots that work well with jeans as well as 5 pocket dress pants and a suit jacket.

I've used the 30L on about 8 trips and the 40L on 10 flights. I like how the backpack straps can be tucked away and I can carry it using one of the handles. I haven't used the shoulder strap and don't plan on using it.

You can check out both of them for size if you like. I have read online that some people feel the 30L and 40L are actually smaller in volume than Topo suggests but I have no idea how they determine the volume.

Im a big fan of the Patagonia Black Hole bags... go from 30L and up. Actually it sounds like the black hole mini may fit your needs quite well.

Have any of you had a issue with fit and height?

A buddy of mine is also looking for a travel bag. He tried on my 40L Osprey and it did not fit him well at all (he is about 5-9 -'10ish). It was not a good fit for his hips and shoulders.
