I'm sad to see Lynx go mainly for that route bringing prices down across the board. I flew to phoenix earlier this month for $200 round trip with WJ.
That's what I see as well.

So who is left? Just Flair now?

Not a chance. With the over-regulation in this country, high taxes and fees imposed on tickets, fuel prices, and a large geographic area to serve a very small population, it's not possible. Thats why every carrier who's tried over the past 40 years has failed miserably.

People in this country need to accept the fact that air travel is expensive here. If it's too expensive, take the bus.

    Beyond translation: "don't be poor."
The fixed costs of a ticket are insane flying out of Calgary.

    Blame Trudeau

In the 2022-23 fiscal year, Canada’s 26 airports that are part of the National Airports System paid $419 million in rent to the federal government.

A decade earlier, those same airports were paying $294 million to the federal government, meaning we’ve seen a 43% increase over that time. Most of that increase has occurred since the Trudeau Liberals came to power in 2015.

Our major airports are supposed to be operated on a not-for-profit basis by local airport authorities, but the federal government treats them like cash cows. Every extra dollar charged to the airports or the organizations that run them is a dollar that gets added to the cost of your flight.

    --snip--

To show how this impacts you, someone in the airline industry recently explained that the excess taxes and fees charged to Canadian airlines and airports add $160 in costs to a flight from Toronto to Calgary.

    --snip--

Security fees, which are set to rise on May 1, are another area where Canada charges more.

The current fees range from $7.48 for a one-way domestic flight and $25.91 for an international flight but are set to increase by almost 33% to $9.94 for a one-way domestic flight and $34.42 for an international flight. There is no way that service levels for airport screening will increase by 33%, the people screening your bags won’t be one-third faster and they won’t be one-third nicer as they yell at you to put your laptops in a separate bin and take your shoes off.

The move will bring in an additional $1.2 billion in new revenue for the government over the next four years.

By comparison, the American security fee sits at $5.60 and is capped at $11.20 per round-trip fare. The Americans also only charge 1.5 cents per litre in excise tax on jet fuel while in Canada the tax is 4 cents per litre plus the carbon tax and then the GST/HST on top of both of them.

Westjet started as a discount airline, so they made it just fine and didn't "fail miserably"
But they're within $8 of AC now. They aren't a discount airline. You're not wrong, but neither is Maxx. There cannot be a viable, continuous business of discount airline in Canada under the current environment.

Kind of crazy to see how small that cost is in terms of federal dollars. We spend billions on useless programs like candy. Wiping a few hundred million away feels like that would be a good investment in our tourism industry to promote more movement within the country. Would also help ease people's hesitancy to move to new cities if visiting home was more affordable.

But Canada seems to love to be the land of fees for everything.

With one very large notable exception.
When WJ started in 1996 the entire industry was very different. It quickly became apparent that they needed to pivot their business model because the low cost thing wasn't sustainable as the market evolved. In todays market, it's not sustainable. Flair will be soon to follow. I think Porter will be safe because they're offering a more premium product and service (with a premium price tag) that seems to cater more to the business traveller.

More air travel = more polution. Steven Guilbeault aint gonna let that happen. He doesn't want people to "move" anywhere. He isn't going to fund big road projects anymore. We all should live in high rise apartments and walk to work.

Lynx just had a seat sale two weeks ago.
They should have sold the actual seats.

The irony of this is that I bet if AC or WS came out and said they would buy Lynx, it would be blocked as it isn't in the public interest. Lynx going tits up is also not in the public interest.

my kids had to sit next to a dude that needed a seatbelt extension on Sunday. He kept passing out and snoring thunder. He was so loud it was getting through the NC on my daughter's Beats Studio 3 headphones! lol.

Every time I get on a plane, I max the seatbelt out and look in amazement at how much fatter I would need to be to require an extension. It's fucking amazing.
Then I snug the seatbelt, eat chips and drink 6 beers.

Apparently 787 business class has a 56" waist limit due to airbag in seat belt. But econ doesn't.

"A staff member then came forward and started saying 'no, you're too big, you're too big'.

"She then pulled out a measuring tape and wrapped it around my daughter Renell, moving her arms outstretched, before trying to do the same to me and Tere.

"At this point, I broke down in tears.

    787 business class discussion.

    Checks out.

Can’t say I have ever had issues with the seatbelts on a G650
