Though I do agree that’s it’s funny to pretend Canadian’s market is that important, we are more of a nuisance on the world stage mostly.

Canada would be easily forgotten if we disappeared tomorrow.
We the 4th line getting a few mins of playing time per game.
    Still important tho!

If Open skies meant I could transfer to a US city and live there then I'm all for it.

AC and WS would benefit far more than US airlines would if we had fully open skies in North America. Our airlines would have access to the MUCH larger and more lucrative US domestic market and in return US airlines would only get access to our podunk domestic market. Consider the cheaper Canadian labour being paid in weak Canadian dollars operating the Canadian airlines flights.

No first world country would open up their domestic market to foreign airlines without a reciprocal agreement to open up theirs as well.

    Canadians can keep dreaming.
You are talking about cabotage which virtual no country allows, first or third world. There are some weird instances like the UK and NZ, but I highly doubt BA is going to start running flights from Auckland to Christchurch. You would have to dedicate an entire airline fleet with maintenance to NZ.

Short haul doesn't make money. AC has a huge advantage over WS in that their LH network subsidizes their SH domestic network. Planes only make money when they are in the air. Flying from Calgary to Kelowna is a money loser because the plane spends most of the day on the ground.

Americans have far more access to capital and therefor a more competitive environment relative to Canadians.
Capital is only good if they are willing to pay the worker over the shareholder. WS and AC can't get enough pilots, FAs, Check in agents, gates agents, luggage people, etc. Why? probably because they don't pay enough and also because while Canadians have a reputation of being "nice", we are fucking terrible people when we travel and who the fuck would want to interact with entitled losers.

    How about some width restrictions
Flying on Big Red roundtrip to London a few years ago the four of us decided that mom and the kids get the middle three seats and dad gets the aisle beside them when flying out and then mom gets the aisle on return.
There was an empty seat beside her all through boarding and she thought she scored an empty seat beside her.
Then we see this mountain of a man struggling to scootch sideways down her aisle-one of the last to board. Probably 6 foot 5 and 300lbs plus. We look at each other and she mouths "f u" as I mouth "sorry dear".
And to boot the window passenger could not for the life of him figure out the window shade so he tried stuffing his pillow into the window as the sun blinded us all.

A bit of a synopsis on the demise of Lynx. I read the court docs a few days ago and this is a good summary.
