Welp, just booked with WJ for my Scottsdale trip at the end of March. I was going to book lynx for 4 people which I was quoting out at $1,600. The Westjet option for direct flights at good times was $3,200. I could have been around $2,800 but didn't want to deal with layovers since im travelling with a 4 and 6 year old. Originally WJ was looking close to $5k, but the airfare dropped a bit and I was able to put that WJ 25% off to use as well.

The last few trips we have done as a family we have done carry on and no checked baggage. It's worked out great for us, might never go checked again (unless I'm bringing skis etc)

Yeah direct is the way to live your life. I plan my travel based on where I can get without a connection. No joke.

Adding to the WJ complaints. Westjet vacation booked and they assigned seats that weren't even sitting next to each other for two of the couples. Have to pay just to sit with your partner now.

Yeah, that (unfortunately) is now a standard procedure for them. You used to get those little things as included benefits when booking through the vacations side, but no longer. Sucks, but at least it's a strategy.

Does WestJet not still give free seat selection when you check in online? I'm flying on a seat sale in a couple months so I guess I'll find out.

Nope, they changed it a while back so you pay for seat selection even at check in.

I fly with them all the time, and I get to select my seats for free at check in all the time. The only paid options are in like rows 1-6 or something.

Unless this is a perk of having status with them? idk.

    Which tier are you?

Plebs pay every time, silver gets 4 free seat selections, gold is 6, and platinum is unlimited I believe?

You're talking about advance seat selection vouchers (i.e., secure your seat when you book). I'm talking about seat selection on check-in (24h in advance of takeoff).

You pay for seat selection in the first 2-3 rows of economy and exit rows at check-in. The rest of the plane is free at check-in unless you booked BASIC. In which case, you get what you get and you don't get upset.

Notably you only pay for seat selection if you choose the cheapest fare classes.

Once again, Canadians prove they will tolerate comical inconvenience to save $20. Then go on the interwebz to bitch about it.

I still think AC provides far worse service on the domestic flight side. When everything goes good then it doesn't matter what colour the aircraft is, but any time I have had issues with flights its been a huge pain in the ass with Air Canada to get things sorted where as most of the time with Westjet its just annoying and gets fixed with a phone call after the fact.

I still remember flying home from Montreal with my wife on an AC flight and being delayed because of a storm. This is no big deal and would happen to any carrier but when we finally got into the air they said we missed our connection and would need to stay overnight in Toronto and they would try to get us on a flight the next day. So we land in Toronto and are making our way to the counter to get things figured out but we looked at the depature board and our flight to Calgary was still listed. So we went back to the gate and it turns out that the exact same plane was still traveling back to Calgary, but they told about 1/3 of the people who were traveling that next leg that they missed their connection flight. When we asked why they told us we missed our flight when it was the same plane no one had an answer for us. They originally weren't going to let us everyone back on but at the end of the day someone else over ruled the gate person and at the 11th hour we were allowed back on. Anyone with checked bags had to figure out how to get them though because they took them off the plane.

I personally travel carry on but I've had immediate family travel with checked bags and when they've had issues with lost luggage it seems like there is much more of a run around from AC than Westjet although neither is a good situation. This is even with airtags in the bags so they knew where they were.

At the end of the day no one is perfect but how these carriers deal with issues is the "service" I look at because snacks on the plane suck regardless of who serves them.

What exactly are you looking for with regard to service? I mean, you aren't paying for an art room. You are getting from A to B with half a can of pop and some cookies.
In the old days the flight attendants would let you rub their nipples.

I would agree. It really went downhill since getting bought out. Sigh.
Reminder: No company ever gets "bought out". They are actively seeking a buyer.

It’s always entertaining when Suntan tries to explain how business works.

What is a typical one way flight to Puerto Vallarta‎ going to cost? Basic bitch cheep fare? Wife has started looking g now for a trip in Nov. Looking around $400 each, 1 way now. Is that about as good as can be expected??
