Default Parent advice - kid is sick, I have to go to work

My kids go to a daycare with 50+ kids, so is seems like they're sick all the time, like today. My job isn't flexible enough for me to drop everything and stay home with them.
For the future, is anyone aware of a nanny-type service that can provide ~8hrs of child care at my home, on short notice?

    Thanks

Is there not an equivalent of ROVR for kids? I'd assume there must be something along the lines around?

Ah that's cause of my typo. It's ROVER but essentially dog sitting/boarding app where regular people offer services, have reviews etc. I would think something like that has got to exist for babysitting. That being said, I am not sure if it can be really last minute, cause even on Rover you gotta book a day or a bunch of hours ahead of time depending on the sitters availability.

Older relative is only thing I know of that works on short notice. Or a family on your block that is wiling to help out.

Don't fuckin start that shit here now. There's a separate thread for that. lol

Edit: just did a quick Google search and it seems these would be all equivalents of that rover app/concept....

Using some of the websites posted above, it's possible to find nannies and babysitters, but it's incredibly difficult to find either on short notice for daytime work.

Life Hack, use ROVER and just get a dogsitter.

    Better question then:
Is there any legal retribution if laid-off due to absences that you can prove being child illnesses?
Like daycare letter or not or attendance?

Rough indeed, I have a super flexible job and it still sucks.
Dayhomes can call you anytime and say your kid is sick, take him/her home and nothing you can do.

If you’re paid severance there is no retribution to a layoff, you can be let go straight up cause they don’t like your face… it I believe OP just started a brand new role, so he’s even more fucked if still on probation

Was talking with the wife the other night about how the hell do single parents do it? You would be so screwed with all the daycare/dayhome illness BS.

The number of days the wife or I have worked from home with a sick kid since October is 10x the sick days (or remote days) we’ve both taken in the last 10 years combined.

It shouldn't surprise people that one of the major reasons kids spread sickness so much is because they're often sent out knowingly sick, because parents have no choice but to go to work.

Dope 'em up and send 'em off, and the cycle continues forever.

My job is pretty flexible, but like many others have said, it's still a nightmare on short notice, and especially when they're young it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME. Mine are old enough now to stay home alone if they had to, but there were some rough years in there. I used relatives when I could, but the problem with anyone you DO find on short notice is the vetting process. It's something you need to research and find options before they're actually needed, unfortunately.

This is me, single dad, 50/50 kid time.
And yes, I just started a new job with high expectations to deliver sales. Speaking with a friend today in a similar position as me, since I know my parenting calendar well in advance, he smartly suggested I book my client meetings on days with no-kids, and work from home on my days with kids, on the chance they're sick so I can work/parent them.

And I also agree with the comment of parents dropping their sick kids off at daycare because they have no choice. Eventually, the teachers will call the parent once they notice their kid is throwing up, spreading shit. By then 1/2 the healthy kids are infected.
I'm considering changing daycares to a smaller one, but it's usually a compromise of less structured teaching. Still, may be worth it for far less sick days.

Grandparents is the only answer. Or maaaayyybbbee really close aunts / uncles if you're lucky but likely not as they have jobs too.

Well good luck dude. And that seems like a decent plan at least for the first few months of daycare as they pick up literally every damn illness. And honestly our kid has had a cough pretty consistently since October, so keeping a kid at home cause 'they're sick' doesn't really work. Our daycare is strict with a fever or puking, those two get sent home and need to stay home for 24 hours after they get better.

Everyone says it gets better (knock on wood) we've actually been pretty healthy the last month. Hoping we've through the worst of it.

Wipe down every high touch surface with some sort of cleaner, every day. Esp. toilets, sinks, the fridge, the pantry door handle, and the dining room table.

Wash your hands when you get to work. Before you eat anything. Before you leave. Right after you get home. Before you cook. Before you go to bed.

Don't touch your face without washing your hands first.
