Preamble: Single stage, mid-efficient, no pilot Carrier Furnace. Furnace installed in 2008 when the house was built. Been working well aside from a fan replacement in Nov 2021. Furnace has had a somewhat high “heat rise” for a long time. Started having new issues in December 2023 with limit switch tripping repeatedly, which was causing short cycles, and making my ecobee thermostat give me an error suggesting a filter change. Removed filter completely, AND set my adjustable furnace fan to High Speed, was previously med-high. This got rid of the limit switch problem, but I don’t want to live my life with no filter, and thought other things may be at work. Decided that I must still have too much gas going in, causing too much heat. I don’t own a manometer, which is the pro tool used to measure gas pressure. However, I felt reasonably confident I wasn’t introducing any danger by using heat rise as a proxy for pressure.

Before I started today, I had a heat rise of 85F (70-155F), that’s above the recommended range for my carrier Furnace, of 40-70F. I used CLock positions to measure adjustment screw positions.

Here’s my process, with CLock Position, change from original, and Outlet temp. (assumed inlet stayed at 70F.

    No filter, fan on high
    only going counterclockwise
    Original, 1 o clock, heat 155
    11 o'clock (-2H), 148
    3 o'clock (-10h), 140
    Noon, (-13H), 130
    9 (-16h), 128
    6 (-19h), 123
    Noon (-25h) 109, (absolute minimum!)
Go back tighter to 3 (-22h), 114 (getting close!)

    Fan to Med-high, no filter
Same clock, 3 as above, 113

    Brand new Merv 11 filter
    Still 3 as above, 115
    Tighter to 7 (-18h), 125 - DONE

This gives me a heat rise of 55F, nicely within, but on the low side of, the 40-70 recommended range.

I have requested ATCO to come give a site inspection, and I may still get someone to put a manometer on the gas to make sure pressures are good, but I would suspect the right heat is made by the right pressure in most cases.

Still having some occasional errors from the Ecobee, it’s possible my messing around with the fan wires knocked one of the thermostat wires loose. I will investigate that at some point as well.

In a lab setting the temperature measurements would be averaged across the entire profile of the supply and return air ducts. Originally my humidistat was mounted below the fresh air supply on the return air duct and I ended up relocating the stat to the opposite side to correct its behaviour. Just be aware there are definitely hot snd cold spots in both ducts with the fan on.

55°F is not "on the low side between 40 & 70". It's dead center.

Yeah, agree there is a big variation. that's one reason I didn't want to be too near either end of the range. The fact I'm not measuring gas pressure right now is the other.

Just for reference for anyone else who is interested, ATCO has scheduled me for a site inspection Feb 6th, so that's ~2 weeks, which isn't bad at all and better than I was expecting.

Isn't it common knowledge that ATCO inspections are worth about as much as they cost (ie. nothing)? According to them I should probably be dead now as my furnace was a ticking time bomb. I used it for another 7 years before replacing during a reno. It was still working fine when we replaced it.

I thought they just ran an LEL detector around looking for gas leaks. Not that that's a bad service, I just thought that was their scope boundary.

Agreed. And I am kind of being a dick this morning. That gas leak detection is what we had them in for I think (it was like 2015 and I can barely remember yesterday, let alone years ago), but we ended up with a full furnace health check and a strong recommendation to replace asap. We brought in an HVAC contractor and he basically told me I was an idiot for using ATCO, haha.

Ya, they would be like calling Fortis to your house to troubleshoot poor internet performance.

Hi all, annually, we get a weird woodpecker noise coming from our furnace. It happens while it is not running and always in the spring. Very consistent 5-6 repetitive knocks. Any ideas from the HVAC guys?

Northern Flicker mating season. We have one that hammers on our rain cap once or twice a year trying to get laid.

Is it possible the expansion and contraction of the metal ductwork? It wouldn't be fast paced like a woodpecker hitting your house but a solid tick or ping noise. This can definitely happen after your furnace turns off as well.

Yeah after doing some research it’s likely a woodpecker. BB Gun is going to solve this one

Just don't tell anyone if you accidentally shoot it while doing some other activity, they are protected.
