So if I do gene editing therapy after my kids are born, can they still benefit from the improvements? Asking for @Mar

    This fucking thread is wild.

    a) I don't have kids.
    b) I got my bachelor's degree from the top undergraduate university in the country and I'm now doing post-graduate studies at MIT.

I only read 4 posts back but got an idea of what this thread is about.

    Explain pro athletes.
Why isn't Connor McDavid's father Wayne Gretzky and why is his brother an extremely regular person.

    Ask his mom
Glad you asked. Half the genetics come from the mom so that explains some of it. I don't know much about hockey but using NBA as an example according to NYT roughly 4.2% of NBA players are the offspring of previous NBA players. That's probably something at least 1000X the probability of the average joe making the NBA. Factor in half of players offspring are female the percentage who make it is even more stark. Furthermore if you consider the number of their offspring who play for D1 colleges which most would consider to be elite level since they often compete against and beat international pro teams the percentage jumps even more.

You realize once your family is in the pros, you also have connections that would otherwise not be there. This helps lots of marginal players suit up in bottom of lineup spots that there could be 4-5 other guys filling on any given day.

Hockey is rife with nepotism, I'm sure other leagues are too. Look who the captain of the Wranglers is as a prime example - He never would have had a remote shot at playing an NHL game if not for this name.

Nepotism, plus unlimited free training/coaching by a seasoned professional (i.e., dad).

Ftfy. I’d say if daddy pays for a pro trainer the net effect is similar.

Basketball - a sport where being freakishly tall is a dominant enough factor that a few very below average-skill players have made the pros. Because tall.

My opinion on pro athletes is its >90% athleticism that gets you there. They're a completely different breed from the average joe. There's no amount of training or coaching that takes a person of average athleticism to the pros.

Once you're in the pros its probably 50/50 in terms of athleticism and mental preparation because everyone is more or less at the same athletic level.

Interesting to see a story like this but its impossible to say Kane wouldn't have made it without the help...unless he had an identical twin without expensive coaching that floundered.

This is a good point. There are plenty of examples of father/sons point guard players of relatively average height (6'2'' or shorter) - John/David Stockton, Gary payton Sr/Jr, Steph/Dell Curry

    Off topic a bit. But...
Let's start with Jesus, Allah and God.

So basically should do the Russian style. Test every kid then funnel them into specific sport if they have certain genetic makings. Cut to the chase.
