Heh, glad Jordan posted that. As soon as I saw 2 kids, dawg, and...horse trailer, the air raid alarm started sounding...
Horses...Ugg. First instinct was to tell you Jeff, you'll be better off to take $19,500 of your budget, party like it's 2099, then when out of $, take the remaining $500, purchase handgun and one round of ammunition, and then walk off into the sunset, knowing that this was a simpler, and even better path, than dealing with the horse thing combined with a $20k truck budget with the attached conditions in current market conditions.
Horse(s). NEVER. AGAIN.
Re the truck, I too would vote Tacoma, or maybe instead of buying look at leasing one, or the ZR2/new Canyon. Then I remember that the lease rates are bonkers right now too - You just aren't going to find much decent for the $20k price range used, that isn't going to likely need some serious repairs due to being timed out with piles of KMs on it. Not to mention be crippling with current and likely future fuel costs. In fact plunking Tacoma and a $23000 max budget into the Autotrader website, provides a 2010 Tacoma with 210,000km, and a 2wd 2015 with 190,000 km, neither of which are anything nice. Nor really any other brand/type for that budget, which is still a chunk of change that I wouldn't want to throw at a within budget used POS these days.
Moral of the story is - I think you're Eff You See Kayed GTS Jeff.

You buy a Tundra for any towing duty. Tacomas are for carrying bicycles and rooftop tents, and probably a trail dog and skinny jean wearing friends.
Why anyone would buy a tundra as a primary tow vehicle is beyond me

Well, a Tacoma might as well be a VW Golf compared to a Tundra. Just trying to steer the conversation away from toy vehicles. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Yeah avoid a 1/4 ton truck for towing, even one horse and trailer will be a lot for them and if you pile the family in you’ll be way over payload with the trailer tongue weight too.
How did we got from an 8.1L GMC to a Tacoma? Asking for @SKR .

Here’s a good starting point.

An Excursion would probably be on my list for towing and family, but I also don't care if my vehicle is 20 years old

Wow, that's not bad, better than I expected, by a lot. I'd put TCT's advice at the top of the pile right now Jeff. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Also, a Tacoma for a one horse trailer will work, I pulled a one horse with or ZR2 and while it wasn't nearly as good as using our previous Duramax, it did the job. You buy a towing truck for the brakes, not the engine/HP/Torque, at least until you start pulling serious weight IMO.
Haggis - circa 2005 we had a diesel Excursion at my company for a couple years. Best SUV during that time period IMO.

OP would be better off buying the golf and skipping the horses. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Or at least, drive the golf to rent a horse.

I used to tow a horse trailer with two horses in Kananaskis area, we would often take them to the trails around Little Elbow. I wouldn't consider anything less than a 3/4ton. This was with a 6.0L 3/4 ton, and I'd still much prefer a Duramax. Agree with the Tacoma for some cycling and tenting comment.

Nice. Will this do for pulling one horse? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
And what is the whole thing about 1/4 ton 3/4 ton etc? Why exactly are trucks measured like piles of rocks??
So you know how many rocks they can carry.

So how many quarters of tons does one need for a horse? Ridiculous hick units of measurement. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Don't get distracted by the designations of half-ton etc. Each truck has a tlreal payload amount on the sticker in the driver's door. Each truck also has a trailer tow rating.
