The first incident, reported on May 19, 2022, was initially reported as discoloured water found on the Kearl lease but was later identified to be industrial wastewater seeping from the external tailings area in four locations, both inside and outside the boundaries of the Kearl site. The second incident, reported on February 4, 2023, involved an uncontrolled release of industrial wastewater from an overflow storage pond. Imperial initially estimated that 2 m3 of wastewater was released, but it was later confirmed to be approximately 5300 m3.

Weird. Perhaps it's because the body I had to apply to changed from AER to AEP and I got confused thinking they transitioned across the board.
They swapped around some responsibilities a few years ago. We used to have more to submit to AEP but now its pretty much all AER on the provincial level. Before that it was the EUB.

If I was currently working on a ground water management project between massive tailings structures, I'd feel qualified to talk about the seemingly obvious importance of managing the underground aquifers to mitigate them swelling into the tailings structures and causing underground breaches that should be clearly obvious to completely fuck containment and introduce heavy metals, MFT leakage, hydrocarbon releases and other significant problems to the overall separation strategies.

Imperial might be new, but it's not like the companies don't fully disclose their tailings strategies and mitigation technologies within the OSSA.

But that's none of my business...
