I agree, but without knowing any confirmed details, we're all jumping to conclusions. With wife/kids present de escalation is obviously the wisest course of action, and agreeing to a fight, or even being 50% responsible for starting one, is insanity with your family present. Alone, fleeing is an easy option with faced with an edged weapon, but once that weapon is out, abandoning your family isn't all that easy, no matter what happened before that.

I agree, flee whenever possible. When you have your wife and kid though sometimes the dynamic can be a bit different. My first instinct is to always flee since I'm pretty quick on my feet. I would challenge pretty much anyone to a sprint especially if I'm at threat of physical harm. But if I'm with my wife and kid then my only play is to try and increase the distance to the threat while keeping myself between the threat and my family. What a horrible outcome.

The internet chatter is that he was with his wife and 3yr old daughter I believe. The wife went into the starbucks to order drinks and the dad and daughter stayed outside on the patio. The stabber was either vaping or smoking weed and the dad either asked him to stop or told him to stop. It escalated into an argument and when the mom came back outside, the stabber said "you better grab your kid". The dad passed the kid to the mom and then engaged in fight and rest is history. Not sure if wife and daughter were inside or outside during attack but all around just horrible.

A few years ago I was out for a walk with my two year old son, newborn daughter, and wife and this idiot on a crotch rocket was ripping about 80-100 back and forth in a school zone. I gestured to slow down (both hands palm down making a downward motion). He slams on his brakes, and comes running at me from his bike (helmet still on) screaming that he will beat the fuck out of me in front of my kids. It was a wild experience. I laughed at him and calmly told him to slow down because there are tons of people outside and his answer was "I don't give a fuck about anyones kid. Ill run them over and you retards can make more". I think it helped that there were 2-3 other people outside yelling at him at the time but people become absoltely unhinged over the craziest things. In hindsight I wouldnt have laughed at him but I am very glad it didn't escalte to the point of becoming violent. My wife was definitely not happy with me over that one and I can't blame her.
