Default USA car auctions - Barret Jackson or similar - for cheapies.

Had a discussion over a pint about a great boys trip. Fly down to Barret Jackson or something, everyone buys a car, and then convoy back. Some beyonder did that with his dad I think. @Ekliptix or something?
Anyway, I'm talking extremely reasonably priced not collectible cars. Under $10k USD, older than 1980. .

Scottsdale. Or California is okay, but really wherever.

As a bonus question, think a not very collectible 1970s car, for. Instance, woukd sell fast in canada if the guy didn't want to keep it?

This sounds like fun; it also does not fit the “budget trip” category. Buying a 50 year old car at auction for low dollars, then driving it hundreds (thousands?) of kms… that car is gonna break down.

Fwiw I’ve done this with a motorcycle, bought on eBay. It worked out quite well. It’s much easier to get cheap, newish bikes than it is cars.

Yeah that's what I'm wondering too. Basically thinking 4 guys, 60 grand, covers the whole trip and you get some souvenirs. Maybe it's a stupid idea, I don't know.

Maybe it smarter to just fly to San Diego and buy bused cars. That'd be fun too. I love san Diego.

I went to Scottsdale for Barrett in January, it was cool, and there was a bunch of stuff in the under 10k range. Some nice, and some real garbage too but thats half the fun

This is highly feasible. I've been to the Vegas one and there are plenty of regular cars not shown on the TV show.

I feel like Barret is too popular and just overpriced as a result. Would do a different big auction elsewhere. Maybe Arizona.

Don't hunt out the barret jacksons - head to the simi valley collectors car auction or similar - there's a ton of them out in california/texas/arizona. The smaller local auctions - or better yet make it a 2 week long trip where you can hit 2-3 while down there and have a couple days to handle tire swaps / minor repairs before hitting the PCH and run the highway all the way up through van for some legendary scenery and camping/motel'ing.

There's tons of not hot-rod cars that are considered collector cars these days - ever look at the price of an old grand wagoneer that isn't rusted out and didn't meet the crusher due to worth more in scrap than resale in the 90/00's? Bringing up something from the deep SW that isn't a rust-belt car - and getting it through RIV process can be profitable.

This has been a dream of mine if I hit a lottery. Go down with the brothers. Buy a couple un-remarkable non numbers matching car on Day 1 or Day 2. One of us buys a sensible 10 yo German luxury car that wont leave us stranded in a Hills Have Eyes scenario.

    Would be a deathbed memory.

2021 but still neat to see some of the cheap deals at Barrett-jackson vegas.

    https://www.thedrive.com/news/41211/...-vegas-auction

A total of 17 auctioned cars and trucks sold for under $10,000, including some classic luxury nameplates that you probably wouldn't mind having in your driveway.[/COLOR]
Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls-royce, and a mercedes under 10k.

Now that's a plan. But three British luxury cars, and bring one flatbed truck.

Think you may have a challenge sorting out a temporary registration and insurance.

^ I'm led to believe it's not a huge issue. At least it didn't used to be. I know of a couple people who did this when the CAD was trading above USD and went to California to buy a car. (4runner and a 308 GTS).

Insurance was not an issue, just needed the usual details.
Registration was through a license plate that would be put on the vehicle (In transit sticker was not used in the US? )
Faxing ALL the necessary docs to the border crossing DAYS before arriving.

Of note, either insurance or registration or both asked for the: planned route(?), intended border crossing, safety inspection from a US shop, all having to be faxed in before being issued temporary registration and insurance.

Again this info is all second hand and 15+ years old so...

When I've done this before, insurance and reg was easy. Insurance I just got through my current insurer. If you want to follow the letter of the law, I think some states require that you get an in-transit permit/temp reg for each state. When I did it, I got a temp plate (literally an official piece of paper with sharpie on it) from the dealer, and used that for the whole trip. Got pulled over twice outside of the state I bought it in (for speeding), and all they cared about was that I had some type of registration and proof I owned it.

I am thinking this is a cool idea but throw in a twist: you can't buy your own car.
Pick names out of a hat and that's who you buy a car for. Only stipulation for budget is the hammer price.
Fly down on one way tickets and convoy home.
