What management are you running to control the boost?
Do you mean engine management for fuel and spark? Hptuners on stock ecu.

Do you mean actual boost control of the boost level? 5psi was on gate only and now it's on 10psi with a manual controller.

I meant Engine Management so thanks for the heads up. Seems like a hilariously fun project.

HPtuners makes it easy to do dumb shit like this. As long as the vehicle is supported, and most modern domestics are

I'm no drag racer I go like once a year at most, but I can usually cut lights in the .200s easy. I don't know why most people seem to have such trouble with the tree.

Been planning an engine build for this thing for longevity, 4.6's have weak ass rods that like to bend. And it bent one! I've been dailying it still on 5psi with the bent rod for about 2 months and it finally blew up driving home from my parents' place in Lethbridge over the Christmas break. Big long hill plus a probably 80kph headwind, the sustained load finally did it in. When I pull the original engine I'll snap some carnage pics.

Back in October picked up a spare 4.6 to build that the guy said "just started ticking" when pulled.

Rocker arm left the chat and lifter ate a camshaft.

Digging into the bottom end, rod bearing ALSO left the chat and the crank is completely trashed. I was pretty pissed at this point expecting a crank to be very expensive, turns out they're only 400 bucks brand new from ford.

Aside from the mechanical damage this donor engine was also a bit of a sludge monster so tons of cleaning was needed. Change your oil folks.

Trying out some stock Coyote rods in this one. They're $500 for a set of 8, exact same dimensions as 4.6 rods, but powder forged instead of cast. A bolt in upgrade. Guys are making 1000 horsepower on them despite them not looking much beefier than the 4.6 rods.

4.6 on the left and Coyote on the right. Again not much thicker, but much stronger metallurgy.

Cylinder heads cleaned up, valve seals replaced, camshaft replaced, and dodgy rockers and lifters replaced (there were a couple other suspect ones besides the obviously bad one that roached the cam)

Rings gapped and bottom end assembled. Will finish this engine up this weekend, then drop it in the weekend after.

Very, very pretty new parts, and the block looks spic and span now too. Impressive, I'd love to see you build a motor in person sometime. Hopefully one of mine, heh. Anyhow, more pics/updates on your Explorer. Are you planning on boosting this new built motor with the same setup as before? If not, n/a V8s are super cool, I had an LS1 Firebird, and a couple LS2 (one Bird one Camaro SS). Love the Coyote V8, new built motor 2015 or newer (suspension) Mustang is on the list, and high up on it.

Yup same setup as before, will run 10-12psi and run the quarter in the 13s at 100-105 mph just like before, but with increased reliability.

$400 for an OEM crank is wild, hooray for economies of scale.

How far did you open up the ring gap?

.025" on top and second, if I were aiming for higher power/boost I'd shoot for more like .030". The formula is based on bore size and application, I think a couple ring manufacturers have charts.

EDIT: I've found you can err on the side of loose and not have blowby problems, as long as its new rings with a good hone.

That's a handy chart for sure. I don't remember my last set of rings coming with any guidelines for various boost levels, nice to see they are supplying them these days.

Come to think of it, I never got em with rings either. Last chart like that I got was with the Manley pistons I put in the Crown Vic's 4.6

Test fit a 2020 GT500 blower just for fun. Port spacing is the same but valley width is wider on the 4.6 vs a 5.0

Picked the absolute worst weekend to do this, but new engine's swapped in.

Sneak peek of the old one's damage. I'll rip the heads off later this week to see if they're salvageable (sellable)
