Unhappy Sum 41 disbanding after 27 years.

Damn, I was totally blindsided by this just now.

Used to be a huge fan right from their first EP Half Hour of Power up to the album Screaming Bloody Murder. Don't listen to that much newer stuff from them but always try to catch one of their shows when I can. Saw them in Calgary a number of years ago.

I guess they announced this today as a way to get ahead of the media but they are going their separate ways after they finish this upcoming tour, new album and finishing off their career with a worldwide farewell tour. So still plenty of time left. Doubt we'll see any reunion tour either as these guys all have their own thing going on and the buck stops of Whibley.

Wonder if it's just a ploy to drive ticket sales. Kinda like Elton John's 5 year farewell tour or the Stone's farewell tour had been going for like 50 years? lol.

I was a big fan as a kid.

I became disillusioned with bands like this which are products of big labels manufacturing an image and sound that maximize revenue.

The guys at Treble Charger took Sum41 and designed Treble Charger 2.0 and made it a big success. This whole era of pop-punk capitalized on the same thing:

Alas, Sum41 has become a casualty of society.

Not that the industry is any different now, i've just grown to appreciate art that isn't formulaic and no longer find the appeal in these bands.

You spelled Greg Nori wrong. I think Bill Priddle had less than fuck all to do with it and he actually detested that pop-punk music which led to their breakup.

Big fan when they were first around too, and I still enjoy their music. I'll be paying more attention to them now since hearing this news (from here). They are getting up there in age, so a split/retirement isn't that surprising, plus the reasons others here mentioned too.

Canadian Punk-Pop scene was fire at it's height in the 2000s.

Avril, Sum41, Treble Charger, Marianas Trench, Simple Plan, Faber Drive, Gob...

Their sound definitely changed as bill became more disenfranchised.

    Truth.
This thread is a reminder of two funny memories for me. One was about a GF I had who appeared in a Treble Charger music video but never managed to break through and the other is about tattoo snobbery. My friend refused to do a tattoo of "Simple Plan" on a girl and asked her to leave the shop.
"No. You go see if Claire's or some other shit hole in the mall will do that. Not here."
    LoL!!

Oh, and now I just remembered seeing Treble Charger play the theme song from King of the Hill at a bar concert. That was fucking awesome.

Well they're still finishing this current tour. Then releasing an album. Then doing a farewell tour.

So ... yeah, sounds like a money grab for attention.

I like the Treble Charger talk here.

Sum 41, Treble Charger, Blink 182, Green Day.... shit was epic back then.

Old Blink 182 and old Green Day were so good. Blink peaked around take off your pants and jacket, IMO. Or at least that's the one that resonated with me. Green day peaked way earlier though haha.

Green Day Dookie and American Idiot are both still in my playlist rotation. Both great albums that are easy listens front to back.

I saw green day on their insomniac tour, fucking rip off! They played for under 90 minutes and had shit opening bands.

Smashing pumpkins on the MCIS tour were amazing, I think they played for almost 3 hours, only downside is that jimmy chamberlin was fired a couple weeks before the show

    Set list here:

    Show was basically this
