Produce or show upon check-in maybe, but in China they actually took them from us and returned them an hour or so later. Seem strange to me - I have not had such an experience while travelling through several western european countries before & after that China experience (haven't travelled internationally since the plague, though).

ya we had to surrender our passports in Beijing and they held them until we checked out. Needed a visa at that time as well.

On the note of getting the shits; be mindful of your water supply. Drink bottled water obviously, but consider other things like ice-cubes in drinks at restaurants, or brushing your teeth. Guy I travelled with got taken down pretty hard due to rinsing his toothbrush under the tap one morning (lapse of judgment after a late night). He ended up going to a local hospital which was "an experience" in and of itself.

From what I've heard being Black in China isn't a positive experience - at all.

I was on the mainland for a very short period of time with my hosts when I lived in Honk Kong for part of a year, just prior to the 1997 reunification with the mainland (1 country, 2 system, until CCP decides FUCKIE YOU). HK people and mainlanders definitely did not appreciate one another's company. Back then circa late 1996, the mainland was shit compared to HK IMO, but I know a lot has changed since then. Probably just my perception too, as my hosts had a very negative opinion of mainlanders and the mainland. I worked/stayed with Danny Lee, he was the owner of Magnum Films, famous there (and somewhat here) for the movies like Hard Boiled and The Killer. Pew pew with handguns in each hand, pewpewpewpewpewpewpewpewpewpewpewpewpew. Pew.

If you're white and 6'0 and reasonably ok looking, you WILL get a lot of attention from the ladies if they're about. I only experienced that for a short time myself in ShenZhen/mainland China, but HK wasn't too much different in that department either.

The digestion thing - it hit me a little bit, both in HK and ShenZhen, but I've had worse here in Canada. I suppose it can be a bit random, but it seems a pretty common issue that can have serious effect. Brush teeth with bottled water as mentioned, bring your own water bottle with you if you dine out in case they don't have bottled water or bottled drinks you like.
