Know someone who was being bullied and openly harassed in front of coworkers, by the boss, for months on end. The guy snapped one day and said something he shouldn't have and they 'fired' him (though I later learned he got a severance so likely forcibly laid off).
Could've been a termination without cause, which entitles the former employee to severance. Companies can basically fire anybody for any reason as long as they're willing to pay the severance. They may have just thought it's far easier pay the severance and GTFO than to jump through the hoops of documenting and potentially having to prove there was cause.

Almost always easier to pay severance even if you'd be justified with a "for cause" reason.

You realize you are talking to the guy who made his own furniture out of salad bowls right?

If you stop paying them. They stop coming. Then you get to say "I fixed the glitch". It's a technique as old as time*.

Also, the idea of references is sort of messed up anyways.

Is HR really going to spend time talking to people that you self-selected as people who will say good things about you? Has a candidate ever submitted someone who is going to say bad things about them?

Though I can see value for someone with little to no work experience (I've been a reference source for plenty of my players for their first jobs), but beyond that, I think it's a nonsensical practice.

Better still, how does HR know that the reference is who they say they are?
Most places do a background check, they hire an external company to verify what's on the resume, it's not hr that usually does it themselves

I've been using my M-I-L and an old boss who died about 12 years ago as references for a long time

MIL has never been called...maybe they called the old boss but I doubt the Crypt Keeper passed on the message

My resume gap mostly consisted of shooting porn for a couple years. Good times and good money, employer usually has few questions afterward
