    Default Anyone into Powerlifting?

I've always enjoyed going to the gym and training with free weights but I've recently gotten into Powerlifting (i.e. focusing on strength gains in Squat, Bench, and Deadlift).

I'm almost 40 but working my way up through a Novice Linear Progression - currently Squatting 145kgx5x3, Benching 105kgx5x3, and Deadlifting 170kgx3x3 (have been focusing on squats over deads for the sake of recovery) and currently weighing in at around 93kg.

Hoping to keep my training going when I'm back in Calgary for 6 weeks this Summer with the hopes maybe I can compete in Europe next year in the Masters Category.

Does anyone know of good gyms in the SW that wouldn't be ridiculously expensive for 4-6 weeks or places in Calgary that sell Deadlifting Shoes?

While not in the SW Kings Fitness is a good place.

I like training in a powerlifting style but I've never competed or anything like that. My total should still be over 1000lbs but I've been stronger in my life than I am currently.

No recommendations for gym, maybe @scboss might have an idea?

For shoes, I ordered a pair of ursus from bearfoot. https://bearfoot.store/products/ursus-low-top
I really like them as they are a very thin sole and have a wide toe box. I've had them for probably 2 years now and wouldn't hesitate to order them again.

I'm into powerlifting. I competed last year, and I've been handling/volunteering this year. I'll be at the APU Provincials as a spotter/volunteer.

For SW, I'd recommend Evolve Seton. This is where the APU provincials will be held this year (June 9-11). I don't know the drop in rates, but you can do something like $26 biweekly? Typically for deadlifting shoes, I buy from Inner Strength Products out of... I want to say Moosejaw? Personally I do all 3 lifts in Notorious Lift slippers. However if you want to pick up something while you're here without ordering online, I'd suggest StrongArm Sport. I don't know what they have for shoes, but they carry all the other goodies, like singlets, belts, wrist wraps, and knee sleeves.

Awesome! How was your competition? Was it your first? What were your lifts?

Sweet - I hadn't heard of those but they look slick!

Were there duty charges? I haven't kept up on the latest rules for cross-border shipments.

Cool! I'm not far, but I may swing by just to check it out. I like the powerlifting movements, but I've never done any Powerlifting in terms of competing or anything like that. I'm down a lot being 45 now, but a few years ago I would have been about 1,100 lbs or something combining all three?

If your looking for a gym short term for powerlifting I highly recommend either evolve Seton or kings fitness. Both of these facilities offer great equipment and offer decent prices for month to month.

If you are looking to see where you are at with a general program candito advanced program is great! It's free and will give you a general idea of where you are as long as you don't overshoot your numbers to start the program. In general for your first meet you would take your attempts like warmups then last attempt would be either gym PR or slightly higher. So 1.3rm 2.2rm 3.Max.

If you are in Calgary in June definitely go check out the APU meet! I have a client trying to qualify for national team and it's gonna be stacked. It will be the biggest powerlifting meet in Calgary for quite a while.

Good luck and any questions don't hesitate. Calgary has a great powerlifting scene and for the most part the sport is great especially when you are competing for the first time.

They were okay. I did 3 meet last year, and injured myself prepping for the second one. It was my first time competing officially. Technically I won gold at my first one, because the other guy in my weight class tested positive for SARMS.

    My top lifts were S: 215kg B: 130kg D: 225kg. I've done better on S/D in the gym, but those don't count.

My injury carried all the way through and I'm taking a year off rather than pushing myself. I was a squat specialist, but I've lost strength focusing on rehab/prehab/isometrics. Ideally, pending kiddo being born, I'd like to compete again in a year or two, but we'll see where I'm at.

You can show up to spectate for free, and there's a free livestream.
All the information is here: https://linktr.ee/apuprovincials2023
Ideally, the livestream will be posted on there closer to the date. Depending on the organizers, it can be on either Facebook (rare), Twitch (common) or Youtube (common). There's a certain feeling when you watch in person that you just can't get online.

What I really enjoyed, is that while talking to him at weigh-ins, he was worried about missing the weight class, because he was out drinking the night before, and he had just "started" powerlifting like 3 months before, but "came from rugby". I blew his squat out of the water, but his close grip bench was like... 20kg higher than my best, and then he killed me on deadlifts.

But the testing results didn't come out until like... 4 months later.

Did you end up checking out the APU provincials? I was there on Saturday as a volunteer.
