I'd say mildly worried about our mid-June flights but not to the point of booking a refundable backup flight yet (but maybe I should!). The strike extending to July would be crazy.

I'm pretty sure this was written by Abe Simpson, but it's got some numbers that are apparently industry sourced:

    https://torontosun.com/opinion/colum...ar-aint-enough

Did a quick search for non-refundable (ie: the cheapest back-up option), and our trip could go from $1,500 for 2 people to Tokyo to $5,000 + at least 1-2 layovers. And -$1,500. Awesome

Public and private sympathy for striking workers deteriorates rapidly past the first 3 days.

I'm REALLY hoping the general public will, and they put on a giant seat sale for July.

I think the average for airline strikes is 10 days.

Try to search up history, AC strike lasted 13 days in 1998. And Lisa Raitt forced them back to work b/c economy in 2011.

Surely there's some contingency with independently contracted pilots somewhere. From WJ perspective they're looking at such heavy losses. Makes sense to bring a couple pilots in to keep the cash flowing They're backed by a private equity type firm in Onex so have more access to funds but still.

On top of the move to lockout it sounds like WJ CEO wants to play hardball. Supposedly he tweeted something yesterday that made it sound like they weren't close to an agreement...I think tweet has since been deleted? It would be such a mess all around if all the long haul flights got grounded indefinitely.
    You’ve gotta be joking…

An agreement in principle has been reached between the union and WestJet. Should hit the news shortly

Why is this unique to WJ?
Shouldn't the AC pilots be part of the same union? What a goat rodeo.

They have different agreements that expire at different times, just like with all union conglomerates.
