Default Abandoned vehicle? When is it mine?

I cant seem to get a straight answer here. Family friend has been storing a car for the last 4 or 5 years and hasn't heard from the guy that stored it, seems to have disappeared.

He wants it off of his property, so he wants to maybe sell it. What would we have to go through to figure this out? Registry?

Call scrap company, they will part it out or auction it accordingly. No cost to have it removed.

Push it onto the street, pull the plate off, and call parking on it. Ez pz

Edit: Oh you want to keep it. In that case make an invoice for storage fees for $50 per day and try to serve it to him, might have to go through court to have it awarded to you. I'm not sure there's an easy route there

You need a bill of sale from a legal owner to register. If you can't find the legal owner that's tough. Fake bill of sale is easy, but obviously fraud. If the guy ever comes back they could sue you, but you'd probably win.

But it from guy who has been storing it, write your own bill of sale.

That's kinda where I'm at. I found someone that knows the guy and has a number that may get hold or him, waiting that out.

Try and make him an offer on the car and go from there. On private property it would be considered a civil matter so Police/Bylaw wouldn't get involved in anyway. Depending on Municipal Bylaws- most vehicles can be deemed abandoned after 72hrs. However I am not too sure what the general process would be regarding ownership of the vehicle... I think that may be a bit of a grey area.

Ya it seems like the owner disappeared for 5 years now, its just sitting on my family friends property and he wants it gone.

From things I've been hearing from people I believe to be in the know, if he ever came back looking for it, he would have to try and sue me for it if I were to buy it from my family friend.

This is quite a cool barn find and I can potentially get it reallllly cheap, so im really thinking I might just go to the registry see what they have to say and possibly make an offer on it if it makes sense.

It's a custom 88 Jimmy. Body and Paint is done, engine is done, needs the custom interior put back together and some exterior pieces put on and I have to change the wheels because they're almost as gay as the lightnings old wheels, but I'd also do a full air setup on it. No pics.

The registry will say you need a bill of sale. You should get a bill of sale.

    That's highly unlikely.

I would have started a paper trail a long time ago if the property owner suspected the guy walks away.

He could "find" that paper trail pretty easily I'm sure.

I think it's at the old Race City.

I mean, he doesn't even have to fabricate anything if he cares about that. Just document the dates and time and methods he's tried to contact the guy. The date the car arrived, etc.
Have it all written out, maybe out in some details about what the storage provider understood initially.

That's a pretty good paper trail.
