The whole concept has been asinine for fifty years at least. Attainable luxury is not luxury, it's just great marketing and a brainwashed public thinking they are getting something special, which might make them special.

Agree. 90% of the reason I bought the diamond for my wife is not even because she wanted one. More just part of the marriage process. Even though she's not big into jewelry, some of her friends may have bought fully into the marketing behind a "rare" diamond and the need to one up each other. The kind of people who just want a big ass stone even if it looks like glass and has 0 sparkle. The same people who think coloured sapphires and there gems are somehow less expensive than their 3 carat piece of glass they have and insist in telling you the carat weight when you didn't ask. These people drive me nuts.
Sorry didn't mean to turn into a rant.
I am still happy with my mined diamond purchase. (Came from Russia, allegedly). But the marketing, false info, and stupid demand behind diamonds drives me nuts.

Lab created diamonds are not "fake" diamonds. People can have different feelings about them, but they are chemically and physically diamonds. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Moissanite is a fake diamond. That's kind of a worthwhile distinction.
Support O&G, buy a polycarbonate diamond.
I agree with this. I mean, people can have different opinions on the emotional value of mined vs lab diamonds vs moisanite vs CZ or whatever. In the end, engagement rings are an emotional and social item, so that could be super important for some people. Maybe her family is from Botswana or something so it's a good reminder of "back home"? I won't tell someone how to feel. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I went out of my way to buy an allegedly Canadian diamond for MrsPiM's engagement ring, but I didn't when I bought her ludicrous earrings.
Does anyone want to know what they cost, how often I clean them or a picture of the receipt??!? Come on guys?! Anyone????!
Didn't think so.
