I got my wife's engagement ring from a wholesaler out of Palm Springs....with exchange, it was still cheaper than anything local for similar quality.

I have used Adi Amour (online in US) and a tiny, hole-in-the-wall store called Freeman's Jewellers on Whyte Ave in Edmonton. Sue and Lim are proper, first-gen Chinese immigrants and are fully awesome in all categories. One time their daughter was behind the counter there, too. Almost bought her a ring!
I saved thousands.
Everyone says the sponsor guy Justin is awesome and you can't beat the personal touch of seeing inventory, so I'd try there.

Diamonds are such a deep rabbit hole, I wasn't the same person afterwards. My wife's diamond came from James Allen, would recommend. Deals to be had if you know what to looking for.
Important lesson:
The cuts angle and proportions are the most important for sparklyness.
Fuck the 4 C's.
After researching for my wife's stone for 6 months I realized that at the end of the day what it looks like under a microscope with perfect lighting is nearly impossible to detect to the naked eye.

This. Did a shit ton of research & ordered the "highest" colour/clarity I could back in the day & the thing barely sparkled compared to cheaper stuff. Turns out the deeper mount/ring & marquis cut don't bounce the natural light well... sigh. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Thankfully now the wife could give to shits about this stuff, but back then it was a big deal.

If you want a real diamond I used Alberta Diamond Exchange back in 2015. I think they are still around up in Aspen.
Personally, I'd go with what everyone else has recommended here and not get a real one.
The best dollars are spent on the cut quality of the round cut. Good is trash. Very Good is good. Excellent is amazing.
Then in colour, you can save a lot of money staying out of D, E, F. And in "quality" which is about the internal flaws, NOT the cut quality of the geometry, you can save a lot going as low as SI-1.
Moving into the VVSI and E colour is nicer, but it's A LOT more money for something barely noticeable. But you can hear the diamond sparkle if you some on "Excellent" or whatever the other equivalent term is.
This is why companies like Tiffany or Birks don't mess around with 1.00 carat diamonds that are only $2,000 and don't sparkle because a drunk monkey fucked up the geometry during cutting. They don't sell diamonds < Very Good, so when your lady walks into those stores, everything looks amazing.

I went there for my wife's ring and have no complaints about it, but that was before artificial rocks were widely available and sites like bluenile didn't exist (or were in their infancy). At the time they were one of very few places that even sold Canadian mined diamonds. Now everyone does. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

@The pen
Did the same, went with a round.
Had a couple places TELL ME which of the 4 C's were important. The fuk.
For me it was also all about cut. Had to be an excellent cut. Shit was gonna blind people. I even went as far as finding angles and proportions of symmetry so that the most reflections amount would occur. Optically perfect or symmetric, involving an understanding of angles of reflection. The lengths we go through for love.
And then going through the online website at 7am when they updated the inventory, looking for one that was appraised/priced incorrectly, checking calculations, doubting your calculations, sweating, and then deciding to pull the trigger aaaand it's gone.
Saved money on colour and clarity too. <VS2 inclusions are not visible to untrained eye. Unless your wife is ghostly pale and you're getting a white gold/platinum setting you don't need a D, E, or F.

So here's what I don't understand and frankly, am glad I'm many years removed from this decision. If buying / having a "real" diamond is so socially unpleasant these days, why would anyone want a fake that is meant to look like the real thing? Wouldn't you intentionally buy something completely different? I wouldn't buy my wife a fake mink coat hoping to fool the world into believing it's real...just buy the real thing and live with your decision. I think fake diamonds have ruined the whole diamond thing for me. If we're being honest here, things like diamond and furs were nothing but a show of financial clout so if that's no longer the case, what's the point of any of it?
