Well. Lets assume aliens coming to earth are not here for conquest (obviously, because they would have won by now)

So space tourists. What do tourists do? They take pictures and leave a ton of garbage. That we may have come across some throwaways like used alien sneakers that they didn't want to pack back up and take away as garbage would be no surprise. Would they leave an entire broken down car? Assuming that there is no "prime directive", I'd assume yes - garbage is garbage.

Assuming that fuel is relatively expensive, and parts hard to come by: Alien just ditched the vehicle and hitched home?

So, IF he's telling the truth, that would mean it's possible, even likely that there are craft from different parts of space-time. It's not unlikely that some of those craft come from places that don't get along with one another. Maybe they pew pew'd one another in or near earth's gravity well or airspace.
