Default Interior Paint - brand reccomendations?

I hate painting, but my teen is painting their room. It's currently pretty dark, and I think we are going pretty light, so, want something that will cover/hide well.

Any of the brands at the hardware store decent? Will I need a primer coat? How many coats will I need? Are the more expensive kinds going to cover better? Seems like you can spend $35/gal or $80/gal.

    Insight needed.

Don't go to the hardware store for paint, go to Sherwin Williams. Depending on the color to color change, you may need a primer.

I usually get mine from cloverdale. If going from a darker to lighter color, you'll need to prime. Otherwise 2 coats should do it

Okay, I assume the staff at Cloverdale or Sherwin Williams are pretty knowledgeable too. Probably they can answer my questions.

Do they have cheap and premium options? Do I want the more expensive stuff? Is it easier to use or something?

I'm making the wife and kid do the actual painting, I'm just procurement....

We used sherwin Williams to do my daughters nursery, expensive shit.

Definitely prime. Even with quality paint. And especially if you are likely to be disappointed by the hue being slightly off in the end.

Dark to light you have to prime to do things properly.

We really like BM Regal Select.

Everyone will have their favourite but pick the one that is easiest to roll on. Otherwise, painter's choice imo

    Agree with primer first.

We did some of our house in premium stuff (Benjamin Moore maybe?) to match what previous owners chose. We did other parts with some mid grade valspar stuff. We’ve been really impressed with the “hardware store” valspar. It covers well, and has been durable… and was just over half the price of the premium stuff.

I will be using hardware store paint again.

"My Contractor" uses and swears by the Home Hardware paint over both SherWill and BenMoore.
I think it's called Beauty-Tone and I believe it's way less than half the price.

Edit - primer is required. "One step" paint is like all-season tires.

100% prime when switching from dark to light. I'd probably even recommending priming it twice. There's not a lot of tint in the light colors which could cost you a bunch of extra coats.

We use dulux lifemaster in all the new homes. I like it. Cloverdale Super2 is also a great paint.

Don't use recommendations from painters. They are expert painters, so all the things that make painting easy for people that don't paint don't matter to them, and things like dry time matter more for them and is a bad thing for you because it gives you less time to fix your fuckups.

So, get BM or SW, mid-range lines are fine, simply because they are very forgiving paints and splattering them is also next to impossible these days.

Last time I paid a pro to paint they managed to splatter fucking everywhere.

Kid might be doing another dark color now. I am on standby until colors chosen.

Any thoughts on the Sico Evolution stuff from Rona/Lowes? Seems to be the "better" version of Sico paints. It's a few bucks off right now too.

Seems like prices are $30 to $50 to $80 per gallon in various brands. I may be stupid but I can't understand how there is such a wide range.

If you are going to Spend around $80/ gallon look at C2 , Farrow and Ball.
    Very good quality paint.
You can get them at Walls Alive and the Staff there is very Knowledgeable.

Maybe 10 years ago you could get F&B for that much. I bought 2 gallons a couple weeks ago, and it was $140 per gallon from Maria Tomas (FedEx from Toronto to your door). I do agree it's good paint though! Histro is coming this weekend to paint my office.

There is zero chance I'm paying $80 or higher for any paint.

    Maybe that's why she's insane.
I shut the door to her moaning,
And I shoot smack in my vein.

You are correct. I paid $130 about a month ago. I was loosely saying that if you are willing to pay $80 then $130 shouldn't be a problem
