Dune is not a great movie. No.
Just curious...did you read and enjoy the books?

Seems like everyone I know that was a fan of the book loved the movie, but people that hadn't read it hated the movie. Which I can definitely understand, there was a whole lot of lore that wasn't explained.

Read the book, saw the old movie. Liked the new movie least of all three, by a mile. It was short of story, and I think story matters more than visual.

Now that's a 6-10 list, or even a 1-5 list, I can get down with. The Thing is a film which is my go-to when I really need to forget about the regular life BS we all go through. Can't believe I forgot about it, and same can be said for a ton of films here. Good thread, reminding me to rewatch about 1/2 dozen great films I've not seen in a long while.

I'd also like to toss in Team America in there also...

Also I don't think Raiders of the Lost Ark doesn't get enough credit from critics (lots of love in this thread). It really is one of the greatest movies.

    T2

Good movies that takes some effort to revisit:

    Schindler's list
    Saving Private Ryan
    Scarface
    Goodfellas
    Good Will Hunting

First Dune movie was like 98% setup. I mean I liked it because it follows the book more closely, but yeah, less filler shots and more story.

I’m disappointed I don’t think I’ve seen Empire Strikes Back once

Ok, not "the greatest" but this is one I've watched many times, and it puts a smile on my face.

Forrest Gump is a weird one. I LOVE the movie, but I somehow don't think it's a "good" movie.

It's difficult to nail down favorites because I've watched them so much before I had a kid, that I don't know if they're my favorites anymore just because of repetition.

    Airplane!
    The Matrix
    National Lampoon Christmas Vacation
    Full Metal Jacket
    Shaun of the Dead

Honorable 1/2 mention: the first half of Super Troopers

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

My top faves have all been mentioned (Goodfellas, Fargo, Godfather II, Platoon, etc) so I wanted to mention a few that haven't:

Once Upon a Time in America
    Total Recall
    Misery
    Donnie Brasco
    Coraline

First Naked Gun is a classic. Basically a perfect comedy movie.

If obscure Jason Priestley movies are your thing, and I have to assume they are, then might I recommend The Highwayman.
