Default Traveling to spokane, alternate routes

So I guess there are a bunch of fires that may affect my drive. I was looking at Google maps for an alternate and the only alternate it gives me is another 1.5 hours, which whatever I dont have a choice if there isn't anything else.

What app do you use when you're traveling? I downloaded waze and it doesn't seem any better.

Any ideas on alternate places to go that you've done before?

The best trip to Spokane is the one where you don't go to Spokane. I'd be lighting the fires myself if I were you.

Ha, as I've always said, Coeur D'Alene is an infinitely better place to visit than Spokane, and that's certainly reflected in the higher prices for hotel rooms in Coeur D'Alene. Was in Spokane last summer and it's gotten worse.

I always just download the offline maps in Google for any road trip and typically take the Kingsgate crossing in BC when driving to Spokane/Coeur D'alene

Lots of property/petty crime in Spokane (it's had a bad rep dating back to the 1980s, if not earlier). Downtown Spokane is pretty rough, with a large homeless population. It's way worse than Forest Lawn and I'd put it on par with Edmonton's Chinatown or Winnipeg's North End. Downtown Spokane certainly isn't as bad as Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, but it's very gritty.

Coeur D'Alene is far superior - physical geography is far nicer and there's Lake Coeur D'Alene right there. Coeur D'Alene looks/feels much "safer" than Spokane - I was looking over my shoulder at my parked piece of junk car in Spokane and never had the same concerns in Coeur D'Alene. Prices for almost everything (exception being hotel rooms) seem lower in Idaho than Washington, possibly due to a lower state sales tax.

I've stopped through on road trips and found locals are friendly, but that's been my general experience everywhere in America.

If you do stop over, hit up Fergusons Fountain Cafe. They had cool staff and dece diner style breakfast when I was there last year.

Otherwise I do not have the same disdain that others have. Probably helps that I haven't been robbed there.

The place is like a time capsule though - everything feels like it's out of the 40's.

Use Waze. You can modify the routes to avoid tolls/highways/whatever, but it generally will auto populate the best route.

I drove from Golden to Spokane via Cranbrook. That drive at 6am down highway 95 was gorgeous. One of the best drives I have done.

My only gripe with Spokane (and the US itself) was that they don't have milk at McDonalds. I tried to order a tea in the drive through in Spokane and they only had cream. What kind of society does not put milk in their tea? Savages....

The Sparwood fire (or the chance of Hwy 3 closure) will be helped by the wind blowing to the north. Drove through there yesterday and it’s getting pretty close

I had a decent time in Spokane (2 nights)

You wouldn't believe it but we had some incredible Thai food there. (A Taste of Thai) - Very authentic.

We also stocked a cooler full of shit from Trader Joe's lol.

Some nice parks for some leisurely walks with the family. I dunno - I'd probably head down south more often if the dollar wasn't so shite and I wouldn't think twice about going to Spokane again

Spokane isnt bad at all. I think state level idaho is just more appealing than Washington. I have family in both states.

Eastport crossing can be dicey, lots of hard asses working there, lots of delays. Ive been crossing no fewer than once per year for 20 years.

Google maps is showing you the only alternative that makes sense, unless you want to spend some time in the Okanagan, in which case i would recommend crossing in Oroville.
I can eat more hot wings than you.
