Default Road Trip to Yellowknife, NWT???

Has anyone made this trip from Calgary, and if so, can you tell me about service stations, where to stop and see, what the roads and cell service is like please.

I was told it's all paved, don't drive at night cuz Bison, and service stations are few and far between especially from Fort Providence to Yellowknife, which is about 300km without service stations. I also researched that the service station in Indian Cabins is gone now too, so bring jerry cans.

    Any 411 would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

That's all pretty accurate. Split it into two days so that you don't get moose'd in Alberta or Bison'd in the NWT. Shouldn't NEED a jerry if your car can make it at least 500km on a tank, but it helps. Also avoid fueling up at Fort Providence, they gouge like 20c a liter vs Yellowknife 3 hrs down the road.

Enjoy the drive, it's fantastic. Enjoy the BUGS once you get into the NWT. If you're short on ideas of what to do once you're there I have the local knowledge since I grew up there.

Oh yeah and "all paved" depends on what they've decided to rip up and re pave this year. Usually between Enterprise and Yk there's 20 minutes worth of gravel somewhere along the way

Is there anything except Raven Days? That, sledding on rock "hills" and 12am daylight is all I remember of my childhood there, lol.

If you grew up there you'll laugh at this, the strip joint is in the old KFC building now:

Is Yellowknife or Whitehorse worth checking out? There's been cheap flights to both lately and was tempted to take a weekend trip to either.

Just took a trip down google maps memory lane, lol. Looks like my school is closed down but still standing, my shitty brown and orange rowhouse is now white, and I can still pinpoint where I found a GT snowracer buried in the forest (which made my entire year because we couldn't afford one)

It's surprisingly undeveloped around where I lived. I guess it's easier to build where there is no rockbed.

Thanks for the 411, that is awesome.

We're taking our trailer up there with us, so that's why I was asking re: gas stations. My Tundra sucks balls when towing so I'm def concerned about that strip between Fort Providence and Yellowknife, hence the gas cans. I was hoping you'd say nope, they put a station in between and google maps is wrong. Guess not.

Is there somewhere to gas up before Indian Cabins to the next stop? I wonder if we should just drive without the trailer and get a hotel room...

Saw Whitehorse for the first time last September and am heading there again this weekend ($212 roundtrip airfare was too good to pass up). Whitehorse was very walkable and certainly worth a weekend visit. The highlight for me was driving the Golden Circle Route in a rental car (which you will need to book months in advance - this rental car shortage seems especially acute up north). Whitehorse -> Haines Junction -> Haines, Alaska -> ferry to Skagway, Alaska -> Whitehorse. https://www.travelyukon.com/en/see-a...oute-itinerary

The drive from Haines Junction to Haines was absolutely spectacular and probably my favourite drive in Canada - certainly topped the Icefields Parkway, Sea-to-Sky Highway, Viking Trail, and Cabot Trail (all renowned drives I've also done recently, though the Viking Trail in Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula with icebergs visible in the distance was a close second).

Heading to Yellowknife for the first time in September and paying over $200/night for the privilege of staying in the Super 8. Hotel room prices in Whitehorse certainly seem more reasonable than Yellowknife, possibly due to the Northern Lights...

Nothing but bison between Ft. Prov and Yellowknife. My usual fill ups on the way up would be Calgary>Edmonton>Slave Lake>High Level>Enterprise>Yellowknife.
Usually would stay the night in High Level to split the trip.

Are you planning to camp with your trailer or is it just a trailer-trailer?

Yeah we are planning to do some camping and sight seeing. No hiking and such but just wanted to check out the local areas and stuff - more to just getaway from life and really vacation somewhere we haven't been before.

Reid Lake is a good site, cute little beach, not very busy at all. Cameron river is nice too but the river can be a bit much for swimming, strong current. Cameron falls is a good short (sub 1hr) hiking trail in that area too.

This is great info too, thank you so much.

We've postponed the trip to YKF till the following week - we were going to leave on Saturday but noticed the highways are currently on alert and there have been on/off road closures due to the forest fires up there. So give it a week and hopefully that shit will settle...

Was in Yellowknife in November. Didn’t see much as it was cold and was there for work. NWT brewing has great beer and food.
