Just go to air liquide and do the bottle trade in, I just got an argon Friday for $90… also you need mix for mig though, argon is for tig. (Hobby welder, feel free to chime in real welders lol)

I don’t think argon is going to be a good choice unless you are using a MIG spool gun on aluminum.

that's if you have a tank to exchange or want to pay to rent a tank, i expect to be incredibly low usage, like 3-4 times a year, not interested in renting.

Talk to OxyPro in the foothills area. I want to say I paid like $250 or something which is buying and getting filled.

Don't rent bottles. You will find as a hobbyist you use it like 3-4x a year unless you are doing a lot of work.

ok i'll give them a call, last time i tried to look for it they only did rentals or exchanges and KMS was the only place to buy a bottle and it's $400 for an 80, trying to get one signficiantly cheaper than that.

I have a few bottles at home, but they are covered under my employer’s contract. We use thousands of bottles from Praxair / Linde so we only pay on the yearly net difference. Be aware, if you own a bottle they need to be recertified every 5 years, so I wouldn’t accept one aged out too far. The bottle themselves I’ve used many built in the 1930s and 40s (a lot were built by Germany in WWII), they just keep replacing the valves.

sent them a message on FB, they sell the tank for $350 prefilled

From what i've found for used stuff, not gonna get much better than that anyway

KMS price is $400 but doesnt say if it's pre filled, fill price is $64 for an 80CF

what's it cost to recert? when i took my brothers oxy/acet bottles in to airliquide they just swapped the whole bottle so it was always reasonably recertified.

If you’re a low use hobby welder, just do the Albee exchange program at air liquide. It includes the regulator and everything, and it will last you over a year on one fill if you’re just an occasional user. Then, you can exchange it for another gas for the same price should you want to try TIG and need an argon fill instead.

The tanks are physically smaller too, which is great for taking up less room in the shop. They are designed to run a much higher pressure too, so you get more gas volume in the smaller tank (also why the regulator is built in.)

thanks i sent them a message earlier, i do need a regulator, i have a mig cart with a tank space so i'm not too worried about space, i could buy a tank now for $350 and based on current used prices sell it for like $300 in 5 years, so i just cant rent one, they hold their value.

Seems like that's the going rate. Even Kijiji is $300 for an empty bottle.

I also found this was the cheapest approach. OxyPro was the cheapest filled tank, purchased there and then took to KMS for fills. KMS doesn't swap bottles, so when it gets close to recert I'll take it back to OxyPro for a swap.

It was mentioned earlier that recert is every 5 years, but it may also be 10 - check the stamps for the star sign.

80cf tank minimum even for hobby use IMO.

yeah i'll probably just buy from Oxypro and verify with them the recert timeframe and procedure.

And i'll go with an 80 for sure, i hate running out of gas half way through shit, i wont even run a propane bbq for that reason, lol.

Make sure your welder has the ability to use gas first and don't forget you'll need to change out your flux core wire for normal wire. You will also need consumables as well if you don't have any of that stuff.

yeah thanks for the reminders, i will need different wire and a regulator, but mine is a multi process, does FCAW, mig, tig, arc and plasma. Came with a few tips, i think the tips are the same as FCAW anyway i just need to put the wind guard thing back on.

got the bottle from oxypro, it was $350 +15$ enviro charge for the fill, and he said if i bring their bottle to them they just do a swap so i never really need to worry about recerts.

Although i'll probably get fills at KMS unless i need a recert because oxypro is $100+enviro fee of $15, KMS website says they're $64, and i assume the same enviro fee, so they'd be 80 vs 115
