Default Finboy is on the job hunt

Well, can’t say it’s 100% unexpected but my time at Telus has come to a close. Timing isn’t great but the package offered is a good float for a while to sort things out.

Curious how the rest of the market is out there in the project management / process improvement world, seemed pretty bleak from what I’ve heard in my network so far.

If you excuse me, I’ll be looking for the best deal on mr. Noodle.

As someone who has been on the job hunt multiple times in the last decade, I can offer two bits of advice.
    1) be specific about what skills you have and what roles you are looking for, and what kinds of companies have those roles.
    2) don't be shy about making sure your whole network knows you are actively looking. People make weird assumptions, and they may assume you are retired, working on a passion project, or just "taking some time away" and therefore not looking.
    3) Make sure your linkedin page is up to date and accurate. Even if you don't post there, recruiters and HR DOES look at linkedin to find evaluate candidates. It's like a resume but without any length limitations. you need more than titles and dates there, specific actions and results are important.

Sorry to hear if your automotive inclined and can handle bullshit, dealerships offer good pay for advisors.

Funny you should mention that, my wife’s company sadly only has a small operation stateside and we would likely have to look for 2 jobs instead of one. Unfortunately I think this is just the start, and a lot more sad stories are to come in 2024.

Brutal man. I left telus back in 2013 after 5 years and still keep in touch with some people that have moved around there and ya it doesn't look good on those fronts.

It’s a bloodbath in my area from what trickles are coming through, so on the upside I’m not the only one.

I got laid off from Shaw (Rogers now) last month. From a Job perspective, its a tough market. All the postings I've applied for on Linkedin have between 80-100 applicants.
It's best to utilize the contacts you have, internal referrals will go a long way.
Even with internal referrals, most places are taking a month to even start the first interview with HR. Last year I was hit up by recruiters monthly, much different this year
    Good luck with your search

Yea I hear a lot about “job market is still hot!” But many of those jobs are federal employees being created or service jobs.

At least in Calgary, it's been a bloodbath.
Over 1000 employees from Rogers in the last 2 months. My Linkedin is flooded with people saying they either took the voluntary departure package(again) or just laid off because Rogers is trying to cut costs. Most of those were Calgary based too
Good time to get out of telecom for sure

Prior to my current position, I was out of work for nearly 2 years around Covid, save for a 3 month stint as a service advisor that didn't work out. My field is pretty specific, so there weren't a lot of opportunities - especially around that time.

Given the number of those in telecom looking for a job lately, you may be in for a (somewhat) similar challenging experience. Should it occur, don't get down on yourself. You're amazing.

And because you're amazing, perhaps the next two weeks is a good time to treat yourself to a break? Many of us don't get a lot of those.... (I had my first 1-week vacay last week after 2.5 years)

Was just talking to my sister in law, she's a higher up somewhere at Shaw, going thru all the layoffs as well. She got offered a 22 month package and denied it.

Not sure what is next for someone like her. This is the second time she denied the buyout, last time was a couple years back. Wondering what her options are going to be soon to be honest.

Maybe she'll end up staying who knows lol

One thing I do have going for me is that I am in no way married to telecom. I was at Telus for almost 8 years but prior worked in energy and management consulting, so there is a bit more diversity built into my background. I’ve definitely been the jack of all trades with a couple different certifications.

I am somewhat kicking myself for not focussing on the business intelligence (data monkey) path route I could have taken after my stint at sait prior to Telus, but a job in hand was much more promising than a lot of maybes. Now those learnings are rusty, but plenty of time to train up.

My friend works at Shaw, she was deemed critical for the moment. She's had lots of colleagues lose their jobs though over the years, many have had a great deal of trouble finding equivalent work. You can really stagnate at a place like Shaw.
